Hi, I'm thinking about starting fantasy (with some other friends) after playing 40k for a while and i decided on starting with high elves. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to start with, and the cheapest way to get it (i'm on a fairly tight budget)?
I'm looking for around 750 points of a balanced high elves army.

For starters, don't buy the rules until the new edition comes out next month!

Obviously! The guy that runs our club suggested the idea to us, we all liked it so we are going to start looking at the rules after the 6 week summer break. But we could all do with 750 points of fantasy when we go back to school.

That is a great idea, and high elves look to be a powerful army next edition... I know I'll finally be doing that Elven Seafarer list I've always be interested in... All the core looks to be improving, although the frailty of the special will be put in the spotlight, I still think they will be competative... It really depends on the aspects of the game you want to emphasize...
Edit: I would convert my first hero, as you really only need a fighter at that points level... Later you will want a battle standard bearer (which are a must now), and I think an archmage is the best lord for HE once you get even higher... Hope it helps

Battalion boxes are usually a pretty good deal to start. If you think you can wait even longer and one of your friends might be interested in skaven, the starter box is rumored to have high elves and skaven. That could be the cheapest way to go.

Wait until September when the new starter box is released with decent High Elf models AND the new rulebook.

Yes, with the starter set coming out, it's definitely worth waiting for! The models should be pretty good, and affordable
