Now when I first was looking through the Ork Codex I thought Ork Painboyz were 50 points (20 for the nob, 30 for the painboy upgrade) but if you look on page 83 of the Ork Dex the pre-made Ork army has 6 Nobz in the picture but only pays for 5 and gets a Painboy. is this some kind of typo? or what do you guys think their point cost is?

As per page 98 of the ork dex 50 pts (20 nob, 30 painboy). That is the only area that matters when it comes to point totaling.

30. As you mentioned, the example a few pages away. Note how it's written differently. Everyone else is "upgraded to"

Sorry, you are wrong. It's 50. 20 for the nob, then +30 to upgrade it. it even says it's 50 points on page 98.

Gotta agree. It's 20 to buy the Nob and then another "+30" to upgrade it to a Painboy.

It says "one Nob may be a painboy" for 30 pts, not "the squad may include a painboy" for 30 pts. Don't see any interpretation possible other than that a 30 point-upgrade makes one nob a painboy.

Ive always played it as 20 for a nob plus 30 to upgrade to the painboy as well...
though only paying 30pts to give the whole unit FNP would be quite awesome sauce! sigh...one can dream!

Well to be fair, Guard pay somewhere around 40 (once you factor in the base model) for their version, on a weaker chassis in a T3 unit that has no business taking saves, let alone passing them and one that will melt the second anything stronger than a Grot gets within 12" of them (and that's pushing it). Orks pay 50 Points to give a 10 man T4 Uberkilly squad FnP, with the options of two of the best non Eldar Transports in the game (Trukk and BW), Multiple cheap (point / attack) Power Claws, Furious Charge and Multiple Wounds and Wound Allocation abuse. And you can always take a 5++ save for a paltry 50 points more. Anyone whining that Painboys are too expensive gets a swift jab to the Alberts.

And, just as another note, the book example list actually does pay the right price. 5 nobs "including a painboy" = 4 nobs + nob that is a painboy. Only the accompanying image is wrong, and they're notoriously inaccurate (note the kommandos and stormboyz on the same page for example, which use the same language in the list but have the proper number of models in the image).

The Funny thing is of course is that a Painboy is no Longer a Nob so cannot buy weapons and Wargear that "any Nob" or "a Nob" can buy.

Nope...hes still stuck w that crappy syringe (crappy for me anyway...the unit normally wounds on 3s and 2s but NO not the painboy!!) but at least he can still benefit from his own cyborky enhancements!!

You know the Painboys attacks are poisoned right? The only time he loses out is when he assaults T3 or less... Ok, thats most the time, but you get my drift.

yeah...thats why i said what i said...4 is usually harder to wound on than the 3s or 2s my nobs normally get...the poison isnt really worth it to me as i have 3 klaws (at S8 and 10 respectively) and I try to avoid things that negate armor and FNP!

Yeah but doesn't poisoned allow you to reroll the to wound roll if they have low toughness?
*ha - found it.* "In addition, if the Strength of the wielder is the same or highter than the Toughness of the victim, the wielder must re-roll failed rolls to wound in close combat." -pg. 42, BGB. So in general, you're not LOSING anything with the syringe. Against tough stuff, it's a 4+ and against weak stuff it's a reroll.
I have a question about painboys, too. There's a lot of confusion among my friends about whether or not Painboys can be on Warbikes. Can you have a Painboy biker in your Nob biker squad? How does that work? I always thought it was buy nob, give nob bike, make nob painboy. Presto Waagh-o, painboy biker. They seem less convinced.

The whole Mob has to buy bikes together, an then you upgrade one of those nobs to a painboy.

For the sake of accuracy, its more like a 2.5+
1/2 chance to hit plus (1/2 chance of misses):
0.5 + (0.5x0.5) = 0.75
2+ is 83% chance, 3+ is 67%
Therefore rerolling 4+ (75%) is somewhere in the middle, call it 2.5+

No, because a model must always use their Special Close Combat Weapon if they have one. They cannot choose to not use it.
The only exception is when they have two different Special CCW (like Mad Doc does). In this case they can choose which one to use, but still cannot choose to not use one.

Where in the rulebook does it say they must use a special CCW? I agree about the painboy because he must give up his Slugga and Choppa so he can't make "normal attacks" without a weapon. but If say a character had a chainsword and a poisoned weapon. Could he choose to use his Chainsword instead of the poisoned weapon?

I would hardly say it if it wasn't true would I! Page 42, "A Normal and a Special Weapon". These models gain one additional attack. All of their attacks, including the bonus attack, benefit from the special weapon's bonuses <errata> and penalties </errata>. Nowhere does it give you an option to not use it, so you cannot not use it.
