Hi everyone. I'm going to the University of St. Andrews in Fife for college, and I was just wondering what the availability of 40k gaming in the area? I'd really like to not have to go all the way to Edinburgh just to play a game......

Hi Chris, It was a few years ago but I was at St Andrews myself (fine choice BTW ). Gaming was always pretty restricted as there was no LGS in town. There was a small toy shop called McDade's that carried some CCG stuff and the odd 'high end' board game like Settlers of Catan but had no space to play games (If its still there it's on a little cut-through from South Street to Market Street - well worth checking out as the guy who ran it was really nice and would often order stuff in if you wanted it). The uni did have a wargaming/roleplaying club when I was there but very few people played warhammer as there was nowhere to store gaming boards/scenery etc. so the games I did see tended to have books/bottles/general carp for terrain. GW Dundee is OK but unless you have a car getting there is annoying. The buses take forever and the bouncing and vibration is likely to leave any un-pinned models in bits by the time you get there. As for general advice - join SAURAS ( St Andrews University Real Ale Society) where you will be able to hear the great urban myths that have built up around the 1998 committee and that party in Nelson Street (last I heard there was at least 1 expulsion and 2 hospitallisations, but never let the facts get in the way) and only ever drink in the Cellar Bar and the Whey Pat Tavern. There are 30 other bars in town but you won't find a better pint in any of them! All the best, C_C

Thanks CC. I was hoping I'd find an alum to talk to about this, and I'll be sure to stop by that toy store once I get in!
Damn...well, I guess joining would at least let me meet other people in the same area who are into the hobby. But hmmm...I may very well try to learn how to drive, or make a shot at making a friend who can. =Grins= How about the store in Edinburgh? It's further away, but I've heard that there's train service there? If I can't get a car would that actually be a better choice?
I'll be sure to look for it.....That sounds like it'd be great fun at least!

There is a train service to Edinburgh but the nearest train station is Leuchars (pronounced Loo-kers) which is about 10 miles away...
As much as I loved the place it is in the arse end of nowhere
If you can get a car/find a friend with a car then its about 15 mins to Dundee and about 60 mins to Edinburgh. Train to Edinburgh takes anywhere from 25 to 45 mins depending on whether you get an express or stop at every station in between, but first you have to get to Leuchars by bus/taxi.
Hopefully you'll get lucky and the gaming club will have evolved a bit from my time there and if not, get it sorted! Grants are available from the student union for society projects, so see if they'll pony up for some supplies to make game boards and scenery. If possible make sure all your stuff is painted before you go, find someone else with a painted army and you've got an exhibition game You'll be amazed how much interest two painted armies on a well built and painted board attracts and this can be a springboard to all kinds of stuff.
Best of luck with whatever you do - and don't forget the pubs

I've got a nearly complete group of Imperial Guardsmen ready and waiting. Thanks for the advice. If they're not in shape I'll see what I can do....thanks so much dude. First club I'll look for when I get there... ;D And I assume it is legal for an 18 year old to drink there? Drinking age here in the US is 21, but I've heard it's diff in the UK.
Once again, thanks.

Don't worry about the drinking, legal age is 18 for all pubs and they all stay open until at least midnight
Oh, I forgot - go to the the Kinness Fry Bar (KFB). Best Pizza in town!!!
