I just got this and I have actually not stopped playing apart from food/toilet/sleep breaks every few hours. It's literally one of the most fantastic, absorbing, atmospheric, and well acted games I've ever played, and the only game that has yet got the actual potential to make me, a post-pubescent man, cry like a baby at the ending.

...and I'm so engrossed in the whole story that I don't want it to end because I know the inevitable. It really is a masterpiece when the whole atmosphere makes you feel actually attached to the game world.
Case in point:
The song and the whole atmosphere tie together. It plays this when you get to this part of the story, and the lyrics stunned me because games with music + lyrics are rare.

it was great. It took me a solid week to get to the end, and I played it all day last sunday from the moment I picked it up, and every night after work. I couldn't put it down.
But, now that I did get to the end I'm trying out the multiplayer stuff and I hate to say it but it's pretty dull. It would have been better if they had the "free roam" online play be the same living breathing world that the offline game seems to be, with random NPCs begging for help, poker games and all that stuff.. just with a bunch of players running around. Instead it's just PVP ganking and gang / police killing for xp grinding.
I will most likely shelf the game now, and go back to it another time when I want to go through the story again, and next time I'll stop to smell the roses and check out more of what the world has to offer.
The game's pretty enough and the story is great, but the gameplay left something to be desired. Deadeye mode made things too easy and hitting anyone on horseback without it is just a bitch. I could see the ending coming from a mile away, which took a lot of excitement out of it, and riding around Brown Landscape #5 for ten minutes while listening to people natter on with that accent got tedious real fast.
It's a good game with an excellent story, but I had more fun playing Prototype, Just Cause 2 and The Saboteur.

Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Hmmm I thought here the game would get a better reception, interesting, I guess I'm especially awed because I've never played a game in this setting before - not the colour, the time period etc. etc. and it interests me.

I saw the ending coming, too. Not like the ending to mafia.
I don't think it was meant to be a twist ending. Sometimes the powerful endings are the ones where you see it coming.
I thought the gameplay was pretty solid, but the free roaming world didn't really add much, I guess they're just isn't as much fun stuff to get up to in the Wild West as there is in Libery City. Although I do admit tying people up and leaving them on the train tracks never got old.
But the acting and scripting made for a really good campaign. I give it a B.

It was actually pretty easy to predict. I wasn't certain, but fairly sure.

... once I got to the homestead missions and John was pretty obviously content to just leave Ross and Archer alone and get on with his life, I thought it's hardly likely to end on a peaceful happily ever after because that would've probably have been seen by most players as abit rubbish. So, in the same way as GTA4, something bad had to happen.

I played with casual targeting for the whole game, even in multiplayer but I never really used deadeye except for the few times I needed it like hostage missions where you gotta shoot the guy who's using a human shield.
I downloaded the new co op mission pack last night and the multiplayer was screwed up bigtime. you would walk into a gang hideout and it would auto complete giving you free xp. So you could just run in and get xp, then run out, and then back in.
I got up to level 19 and finished a bunch of the Lawman 2 challenges where you need to finish 2 hideouts without dying
Yeah the multiplayer's fethed since the co-op pack. I had to play in a private free-roam to even get online, and the gang hideouts kept on either not activating at all or giving us free XP.
