Looking at the High Elves my immediate first thought was priming
white. I have since seen things saying that metal goes on much easier over black. Just looking for some experienced opinions. Thank you.

id say take two minis, prime one white and one black.

paint both of them and see what fits your painting style/color scheme better.

I'd prime white or black depending on whether the majority of the figure will be bright or dark. I've also heard that metallics work better over black (I don't prime white, so while I know it works on black, I can't compare results), but you can always paint over specific areas with black before you break out the metallics. Prime whichever color will help the most, knowing you can always undercoat specific parts in other colors.

What kind of color scheme are you going for?

I personally prime my stuff black.

I think I'm going with the classic clean High Elf look. except I'm going to substitute the blue with liche purple.

i personally go with whichever primer color is most similar to a base color on the model. it sounds like white would be in your case as i can't think of a HE paint scheme i've seen with alot of black.

Well, that's a thoroughly unhelpful comment.

@kingcr: So white robes with Liche Purple accents, eh? Nice. Priming black will give the purples a better base to work off of. While it's tempting to prime white for the robes, it's really not too much of a pain to work up the white if you base coat those areas with Codex Gray.
