Well at 13 not much you can do. For another idea instead of paper routes you could mow lawns in the summer, rake leaves in fall, and shovel driveways and walks in winter. This only really works if you live in suburbs with smaller yards or in the city and dont mind hard work. My older brother use to make about $50 a week and that was 15 years ago.

Not sure what paper rounds are like in the US, but here in the UK they are little better than slave labour. Early starts, out in all weathers and lugging around a heavy ass bag only to get chased by dogs, nearly run over on your bike and then shouted at by some old biddy for not shutting her gate. The only perk of the job is having a sly peek at the porno mag being delivered to that creepy bloke who always invites you in for a lemonade. No thanks.
Have a wander around some of the small businesses in your area. Independant places are more likely to give you a few hours on the weekend or after school than a big name place. Also it will be cash in hand. Restaurants always need dishes washing, car lots will need vehicles washed, even try asking any older people in your neighbourhood if they want their lawn cut or hedges trimmed. You may even find that your parents will top up this money as a reward for getting out there and trying to make money rather than scrounging off them.
Good luck mate.

All you need is a balaclava, a gun, two or more friends, and a bank.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Borrow a shovel, a rake, and a couple garbage bags. Go find your neighbors that have dogs- or other pets. Tell them you'll scoop the poop for them every week. It usually pays better than paper routes and only takes a couple hours a week(alot less than a paper route).
And getting used to shoveling crap is a basic life lesson. Builds character and all that.

you could always become an assassin. Children make good killers, because i'm fairly sure that there's a law that says if your under 15 years old and you kill people you can't go to jail, they'd just send you to a rehabilitation resort and you'll be back on the street in hours, after sipping pina coladas on the beach with big-titty women.
you could charge like $40 a head, and if you kill enough people, you could have your warhammer army in no time.

Sell blood. Its easier to sell other people's blood. You can sell much more of it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Vindicator#9 wrote:Well at 13 not much you can do. That's certainly true on the large scale, which makes me sad since that's how I made money during the summers when I was younger. I lived in a decent enough neighborhood but people were lazy and willing to part with $10 for 30-45 minutes work of mowing their yard. I made a killing (relatively), too bad I didn't bother to save up.
If your neighborhood doesn't already have a set lawn care service provider this still may work for you. Even the illegal aliens don't have their company drive out their equipment for $10-15 a yard.

My wife's brother made enough money when he was a kid from mowing lawns that the county came after him for not having a business license. Of course, they're natural entrepreneurs it seems. Lawn mowing is good, but unless you can use your parents lawn equipment ( and they have it ) you're going to have to come up with that equipment, and you'll never be able to rent it and still make money.
You can always just ask your parents for money. I would approach it from this direction......Show them some examples online of models painted to a competition level. Over dinner or something, sit down and explain the rules of the game, and do some hit calculations ( pretty simple probability. If you haven't had it in algebra yet you can pick up a used textbook for a couple bucks and learn it. If you can multiply and add fractions you have everything you need to learn ). Introduce your parents to some of your gaming contacts, which I'm guessing some are adults if you're going to a FLGS. From my experience, parents want their children to have good extracurricular activities, particularly if those can lead to further education or opportunities. I don't think they have miniatures scholarships , but talking to people in your game group can lead to opportunities.
I'm not a parent, but if I were, I would think miniatures would be high on my list of hobbies that I wouldn't mind seeing my children get in to. I think it teaches discipline and following through with tasks ( If you get a fully painted 3000 point army, you've had to follow through). I'd try to convince your parents of that. Where I grew up, yes. They're starting to go to newspaper boxes where I live. Often times it wasn't a kid on a bike but it was a guy in a Ford Pinto, but the short answer is yes.

Being someone who plays these kinds of games I think they would be a good activity for my kid to get into if he desires, but, depending on the quality of people at your local game store, taking your parents in might repulse them into never giving you money again!
As far as lawn mowing goes, A lot of people (myself included) would rather hire some kid to mow the lawn than some illegal immigrant. Elderly people would be your best bet to find customers. They don't want to mow their own lawns in most cases and they love seeing kids working instead of being lazy bums.

If you go the paper route track, make sure you stop at every house to introduce yourself. Be pleasent and see if they have a set place for you to place their papers. Most papers have a prepaid subscription deal, but if you get a collection route the tips can make up for the extra time.

Yes they are just tossed in the driveway or lawn. If you happen to be a problematic customer you might have gotten one flared across your yard to where the whole thing comes unraveled all across your yard and gets wet from the dew. Was always a nice piece of vindication.
My parents (here after refereed to as those fat fethers) got a paper route back in the early 90's. Funnily enough though I did the vast majority of the work for rolling and throwing it, and my grades in high school for that time plummeted because of it. You wake up at about 2:30 in the morning, go to the meet up spot and get your papers. Assemble, roll, and bag them and then go throw them. Our route at the time I think had about 300 addresses on it which also pretty much changed on a weekly basis. Those fat fethers sucked and were slow at everything and were only useful for driving. I couldn't drive since I was 14 at the time or I am sure they would have tried to pawn the entire thing off on me. From there I would have enough time usually to go home and get ready for school so I could pass out in class. It "helped" that I went to probably the worst school in my district so the teacher never cared if I was awake or not.
On Wednesday we also had something called Non Standard Delivery. It was a weekly free paper that went to all the houses in our delivery zone that were NOT subscribers. Those fat fethers would spend the majority of Wednesday rolling and bagging the NSD's waiting for me to get off of school. From there it would be a ride around the neighborhood on the hood of the car so I could toss both sides of the street at once. Those fat fethers couldn't multi-task... noooooo.
Sundays starter on Friday. The majority of the Sunday paper would be dropped off and assembly, rolling and bagging would start. Then on Sunday morning the front page section would get dropped off. Finish up assembly rolling and bagging and then get to throwing. Throwing a Sunday paper is about 6 times s hard as a regular one, because they are 6 times as heavy and fly like a log where as a regular paper is kind of wing shaped. You can kind of spin throw a regular paper and it will sail. Throwing a Sunday was all about parabolic arc and letting it's mass do the work. It was also easy to mess up the throws on those with those and I did hear about it from those fat fethers who wouldn't be bothered to really throw any themselves. You also had more customers on Sunday because of people only taking the Sunday paper... so it was an entirely different list.
Worst parts about it though were I never really got any money out of it for myself since it was their job... even though I was doing the vast majority of the work. Oh I got to eat and rent was paid but still. It was a "family effort". Just like the lawns that I got stuck mowing in the summer that they lined up were a "family effort". Their part of the "effort" was driving me from one place to the next. They got all the money from that too.
feth them and I am glad they are both dead.
I hope that answers your questions about what paper route are like in the U.S. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yeah... people still do get the paper... my girlfriend subscribes for weekend service to the the Sunday coupons... I don't/won't touch the thing.

..... bit of a sore point we've touched upon here eh ..?
I used to deliver 2 different free papers, swagged 2 rivals on the same route and delivered both at the same time. With the insert adverts as well I was making anywhere from £20-£40 a week, which was a fair old amount of moolah for a teenager in the late 80s/early 90s.
Kept me in cider, warhammer etc etc anyway.
