Hello!

This is my first time sharing my figs and their paint jobs, Ive got lots of stuff in progress but wanted to get a feel for what others thought of what Im doing. I just got into 40k the same month Blood Angels was released, so went with the bandwagon and chose them as my starting army. I am currently working on a Blood Angels successor chapter I am calling "Nine". I am painting and modding them in such a manner that I can swap weapon loads out via magnets and call them Vanilla Space Marines if I wanted to. This is the first fig I've painted in 12 years, Ive done lots of reading and tutorial watching, so I don't think my skills are to bad, but a pro painter I certainly am not.

One of the things that I really loved was dremel-based battle damage, not just painted on stuff but actually drilling holes in the fig. So I went ahead and tried it and wanted to see what people thought. The 'nought isn't quite done yet, still some detailing and stuff to do, but the battle damage is done for the most part. I am going to theme the whole army as if they have been fighting Orks, lots of slugs in the air, no energy beam damage, no 'Nid claw marks or acid spits (I cant wait to dupe the acid spit thing with the dremel on a tank), just bullet holes of various sizes. I'm going for an metal look, I want the figs to look like they are metal, I've had people already who thought it was made of metal and were surprised when they picked it up.

The bullet holes go all the way through except for the ones on the Sarcophagus, which go in but don't fully penetrate. The ones on the shoulder are larger to represent a larger caliber weapon hitting the 'nought.

So tell me what you think, what you do, what you don't like, what you think I could do different or better. I would appreciate the input! I've got a baal predator and a Stormraven kitbash that are almost ready for the dremel, and want to make sure my technique is what it should be before I start in on em.

Thanx!!

The Digital Spider

P.S. If I botched my "put pics in forum post" roll I apologize, Ill fix it as soon as I figure it out.

1.) Pretty freaking sweet
2.) Damage effects on the front look spot on, the stuff on the shoulder from the side view looks off for some reason though. Maybe it should look more like bent metal and less like hole punched plastic.

Just as a side note, I personally have never understood metallic paint on the pipe/hose looking bits on dreads and heavy weapons. Those look like header pipes to me, shouldn't they be flat black?

I appreciate the feedback, I agree, the larger holes in the shoulder feel "off", just not sure why. As for the tubing/piping, I figured with a piece of equipment bound for combat they would probably metal coat them to avoid as much random combat damage as possible.

try adding some wire bits to the holes on the shoulder. In fact some heavy gauge electrical wire with the end of the insulation stripped and painted would look good sticking out of there.

Just make sure if you use some electrical wire, that it only has a single strand of copper inside it. OR if you go with multi-strand that you fray them out to look torn.

"Of course I have, have you ever tried going insane with out power? It sucks! Nobody listens to you."

Did you guys know Canada has a friggin desert?

the one thing i suggest here is to do something about the transfer sheet sticker on the shoulder, it looks very off, perhaps drybrushing some metal might give it a more blended look?

You're not playing the game like I play it...why aren't you playing the game like I play it?! O_O

Go check out page 64 of Games Workshop's "How to Paint Citadel Tanks." Their version of melta damage incorporates a long thin sausage of greenstuff pressed concentrically around the edge of the holes, this gives the appearance of melted metal thats puddled outwards. They also do a good job of giving the illusion that the melted metal has dripped down a bit along the bottom edge.
