Depends on the opponent, his deployment, what you expect/need the unit to do in the battle etc. No real catch-all for where to deploy them. I've used them as a screen or sent the to the flank multiple times. You just need a feel for what they do and handle which will only come with experience.

You rape his jacks with them, that's what. If he's running jack-light or Hordes, keep them back for killing his caster/warlock later, and/or screen your more important stuff with them.

Also depends on if they have the UA or not.
