I bought it today over Napoleon, mainly because napoleon has barely any factions, and generally, some of my friends who have both say with the recent few patches that went into Empire: Total War, Napoleon is worse.
General Discussion thread is a go!

Overall I think it's an excellent game. I've played over 150 hours of it and beaten it with a number of factions, but there are some things that are irritating about it.
With some of the factions the world just seems too big to get anything done. For example, with the British you have to manage forces on three continents, which I understand is the point of the game, but it can be a little tedious.
Also, the slow rate of naval movement. Ships are supposed to be able to move faster than armies, but getting a flee to the Indies takes years in game time.
Another bothersome thing is the lack of variation in unit types across the major powers. They solved some of these problems with some of their downloadable content, but everyone having basic Line Infantry is boring.

Have you tried mods? I've heard the UC version of Darthmod solves the redundant feeling of some of the factions, since it adds unique units to factions, as well as fixes a lot of the errors.
I'm just downloading it right now (it takes so F'ing long, 4 hours to the minute for 25%)

As a long time TW player (since the first Midievel TW - I never had shogun), this one's a little harder for me to work my way into.
It seems they took a lot of ideas from Europa Universalis and used them here. Specifically with regard to things like diplomacy, advisors and such.

Yeah, TBH, I liked Med:2's system of Diplomacy better.

I've played Rome, Empire, and Napoleon
Napoleon seems easier than Empire as far as management goes. Gameplay and graphics are the same, with a lot of reskins of, or just blatant copy+pasting of, Empire units. N:TW is little more than a pricey expansion pack that -still- takes up too much space on your hard-drive for what you get.
Rome beats both of them, hands down, Needing to put family members in each city instead of having an NPC governor is rather annoying, and so is needing to actually use a diplomat to open talks, but that's really all that I dislike. Otherwise, I'd take the base version of R:TW over the gold versions of either Napoleon or Empire

I suggest Imperial Splendor. It's an excellent mod that actually fleshes out the minor factions so they don't have 1-unit rosters. We can play together on steam, my username is Piemaster31.
Also Napoleon: TW is just a watered down expansion pack for Empire, but it was released on a 50 dollar price tag.
