Subject: I threw my hat into the ring awhile ago, but should I still play VC in 8th?

About two years ago I sold all my Warhammer 40k stuff for a pretty awesome profit and bought some VC stuff with some of the money so I could get into WHFB. I enjoyed painting the whole lot of it up nice and played some very casual games (it's a ghoul heavy, non-magic heavy list). The list was basically two Heros, one with book and armor and GW the other vamp with terror sword and wings then 4 blocks of 10 man ghouls units w/ champ and some blacks knight that would run up with a varghulf. List is straight forward but I didn't lose a lot of games and played with it about six or seven times.
But with 8th edition out now I was wondering if I should bother relearning how to play. From what I've heard VC aren't going to be that great in the newer edition. The upside is, I've heard the units I do have painted and unpainted (still in the boxes) are actually going to be the better stuff in a VC list now. Here is a short list of what I have.
4 x 20 man units of Zombies
4x 10 man units of ghouls (probably somewhere around 40 up to 80 extra unpainted in my closet)
two Varghulfs
10 black knights
20 to 40 unpainted GG
My winged vamp lord and a few conversion vamps I use for different stuff
With this stuff can I still make a decent playable list or should I start looking for a buyer?

I would suggest waiting it out and playing a bit to see if you like it. Quitting seems to be a knee-jerk reaction and you may end up regretting it if you decide to quit with just this.
From what I've heard, vampires have indeed been taken down a notch, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The playing field has been shifted, but I doubt they will be taken out of the running. Certain things were taken out that need to be taken out (such as auto-break or fleeing due to fear), though others are harder to judge.
Don't despair. Get back up and into the fight.

Wait for the faq and play a few games. My hope is that, with the loss of autobreak, they'll reduce the point cost of the now overpriced fear causing minis or nerf crumbling

Looks like you can still make a decent Ghoul horde out of those models. With Helm of Command and Lore of Light you can have them attacking with WS7 or WS10 & I10.
Main weakness may be a lack of Banners for the breakpoint mission. With a General, 2 Units of Grave Guard and a BSB you should be all-right since Vampires tend to lose the game if the General is dead anyway.

I'd definitely hang onto them, at least until the erratas come out. I think VC will still be able to compete, we'll just have to see how they can be configured now...

I don't really know how VC will be competitive in 8th, but it will certainly be different than now.
Everybody's favorite bunker lord + Regen banner + GG list won't work anymore. If you tried that in 8th you would probably get stomped.
The characters aren't really an issue (since the %slots don't change *anything* really) but it's the fact that you need a lot of crappy infantry and not much support now instead of elites. That might screw over VC but I don't know at this point. Just my $.02.

8th seems to be looking pretty well-balanced - I doubt that there will be a huge gap between OP armies and under-powered ones like there was in 8th, so VC, or any other faction, is viable IMO.

I still think VC will be very competative and powerful in the tournoment setting. They will still use the same mission//pitch deployment, so banners wont matter as much. No one really runs the bunker unit in tournament style or should rely on auto breaking. No good VC player anyway. The way magic is right now they are still a powerhouse. A few things need errata like the coach, as it stands its very powerful, even more then ever. a Varghulf is even better imo with thunderstomp.
