I spent a great deal of time ignoring my Standard Bearers, leaving them in the "too hard" pile.
I can't freehand at all but I finally decided something was better than nothing, so this was my solution.

I was so pleased with it and the method is so easy, I've done the same with my ravenwing standard bearer:

I'm sure you can all see how I did it but just in case anyone is wondering:

- Find a standard you want and cut it straight out of the codex, preferably an older / unwanted / your friends edition. You could scan these and print them out but this is just a lot easier.
- Leave the cut out in water for a minute or so, till it’s completely soaked.
- With a knife (or something similar) carefully peel back all but the very last layer of paper. I havn’t ripped any of my standards yet but I can see it happening very easily here: be careful!
- With the standard still wet apply it exactly like a water transfer to the plastic banner, and use a brush to get rid of any crinkles.
- After the water is dry, wash over a few layers of Microbans Micro-sol and Micro-set.
* These are made for decals so I’m not sure if this step actually does anything. (If anyone knows, comment!)*
- The cut outs aren’t an exact fit, so after everything is dry go over with thin paint to extend the image where needed.

The results are not perfect as you can see, but they’re a darn sight nicer looking on the table top than an unpainted banner!

Edit: Just in case anyone is wondering, the 1st Dark Angel is over 2 years old and doesn't show any signs of his banner falling off yet!

Hmm, can you go into more detail about peeling back the paper? I'm not sure what you exactly mean by that, although I will definitly be stealing that idea once I know how to do it.

Superb work!

The codex paper is very thick, compared to say a white dwarf.

What you're doing in that step is stripping away the other side of the page, and anything else in between. That's why I made sure it was soaking wet first, to let them seperate easily.

I don't have another plastic banner to show the steps completely but I think this should help a bit:

That works supprisingly well
Which wings are you talking about? The ones on the bike come from the ravenwing battleforce, or ebay.

Neat! I wonder if I can use the custom water-slide decal kit I have to do something similar for an IG standard...

Hmm, will try to steal this idea. Seems a bit tricky though... Nice write-up!.

This is good stuff. I didn't know you could do this. (Although I think I am going to try the scan and print option, since I don't have any old codices lying around.) Have you tried printing it on really thin paper to see how that affects it? Also, with the ones that you have done, how likely is the paint underneath the decal to show through?

Very nice tip indeed. Like other people have said I'd be intrested in seeing the results from printing onto thin paper
