Hello, First off I am not entirely new to the wargaming genre. While I was still in my teens, my brothers, a handfull of freinds and I had a short lived foray into Warhammer fantasy. I have been playing D&D since I was about 12, WoW for about 4 years(though I quit) and I have a sizeable collection of the game Heroscape (for playing with freinds that are not too hardcore). Recently while at a local hobby shop I came upon a glass case of painted Space Marines and my inner geek could not resist. I purchased a core rulebook, SM codex, SM battleforce, SM commander and many paints, brushes, tools, ect. Anyway, I am in the process of cleaning bitz and assembling minis. So far I am leaning toward a custom SM chapter of my own devising. If anyone has any tips or anything I am all ears. Well I guess that about sums it all up and I look forward to becoming an active member of the Dakka Dakka community!

Ahhh my inner geek speaks your language. Custom chapters are cool but the rich background and specialised codexes (black templars, dark angels, space wolves, blood angels) means alot of the established chapters are fun to follow too.

A good go between is to make your own successor chapter! I am working on a disciples of caliban (DA successor) that means i have a fairly original chapter and i get to use the deathwing! Read up and welcome to geeks paradise!

I would agree with WildeThing whilst its more fun to assemble your own chapter and create a color scheme all by yourself you won't have the rich background, the other thing is to borrow bits from another SM chapter ie Ultramarines (who are generic anyhow) like special characters.

but at the end of the day these are you models your painting, your army your building as long as it dosen't break the rules do whatever you like mate.
