Breaking Something Valuable

Hey there,

After a long break, doing some thinking, and sheer boredom, I've spawned this list. It's kinda a 'pick your poison' list. I have tried a 1000 points varient, and really enjoyed it. So here goes:
However, I've got multiple different variants, trying to decide what is best.

-Bjorn the Fellhanded: 270

-Grey hunter squad (9 men), meltagun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, rhino: 200

-Grey hunter squad (9 men), meltagun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, rhino: 200

-Grey hunter squad (9 men), meltagun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, rhino: 200

-Wolf Guard (3 men), 3 combi meltas, 3 powerfists- 129

-Vindicator: 115

-Vindicator: 115

Total: 1229

Leaves me with 271 points, so here's my thoughts on spending them:

Option 1: 270 points

-Wolf Priest Möttull the Fearsome, bike, meltabombs, wolf tail talisman: 145

-3 bikers, one attack bike w/ multimelta, meltagun- 125

Option 2: 265 pts.

Vindicator, siege shield- 125

Land speeder, multimelta, HF- 70

Land speeder, multimelta, HF- 70

Option 3:

Arjac- 188

5 grey hunters, meltagun, wolf standard

Option 4: 270 points

-Land speeder, Multimelta, Heavy flamer: 70

-Land speeder, Multimelta, Heavy flamer: 70

-Land speeder, Multimelta, Heavy flamer: 70

-Lone Wolf Leiðólfr Oxjaw, Terminator armor, Thunderhammer- 60

Option 5: 275- this is kinda out of place for a mid range army, but I think that the anti tank and heavy armor at range is nice.

Long fangs (6 men), lazorback, 3 plasma cannons, 2 lascannons.

So that's it, really. What list would you suggest? My FLGS has quite a mix of armies, so I want this to take down almost anything.

For Russ and the Allfather!

EDITED ALL OPTIONS 7/3/10!

Your list, and your dilemma, is remarkably similar to mine. A solid mechanized base, with a number of leftover points.

I can't make up my mind between option 1 or 4. I think those are the strongest, and infact I like option 1 enough that I'm going to look at incorporating something similar into my own.

I know for a fact that option 2 will leave you dissapointed. I initially fielded a Swiftclaw Pack with a Wolf Guard, but to be honest, it was rarely effective. Giving the Swiftclaws a re-roll to hit will make them much more viable.

Can't say much about option 3. Never used Termies in a Drop Pod, or Arjac, for that matter.

My suggestion would be this: Embrace those 270 points. Use it for psychological warfare, as your unknown variable. It's expensive, but come up with 3-5 very different (but still complementary to the rest of the army) variants using those points. For example, I've got 230-245 points left over in my list, and with that I will field one of the following:
-A Swiftclaw Biker Pack
-Two units of Wolf Scouts
-Land Speeders
-More tanks
-Terminators
-A Fenrisian Wolf mob
-Canis and a smaller wolf mob
-Grey Hunters in a Las/Plas Razorback
-An Iron Priest w/ Thunderwolf Mount + Retinue

I'll randomly choose one each day I go to play. I'm known as a very hard player to beat because no one knows exactly what variation I'll be bringing to the table, and thus it's hard to be ready to counter it overall.

The thing your list is lacking the most is long range firepower...here's what I'd do for the last 271 points.

1) Long Fang Pack with Lazorback ...'nuff said.

5 Long Fangs
4 Missile Launchers, Lazorback -190

2) Lazorback for the Wolf Guard Pack as a Dedicated Transport that is just another tank to run around sniping folks. Saturates the field with targets and helps with the Long Range aspect for those things you DON'T want to get close to.

Just my thoughts...

Now the Bikerz...Definitely option 1...option 4 can also help in the range deaprtment; however, I prefer Long Fangs just because you don't need to be as close.

Option 1:
+You could throw the wolf guard into terminator armor for an extra 15 points each putting you at 45 points then replace their storm bolter for an additional 5 points each (15 points) and replace their power weapons with power fists for an additional 10 each (30 points) putting you at a total of 90 points

-/+You can also replace a vindicator with a rhino giving you an extra 80 points to spare and then throw in a land raider for 250 points. so in total you used up 260 points

Total of 1489 points

Option 2:
+Add a 3rd Vindicator

+You could throw the wolf guard into terminator armor for an extra 15 points each putting you at 45 points then replace their storm bolter for an additional 5 points each (15 points) and replace their power weapons with power fists for an additional 10 each (30 points) putting you at a total of 90 points

+Make that squad of 3 terminators into 4 terminator wolf guard

Total of 1482

Option 3: (completely random)
-Remove Both Vindicators

+ Add 2 Rhinos

+Make the squad of 3 Wolf Guard into 2 Squads of 5 Wolf Guard Terminators and have them both ride in rhinos Giving you a

Total of 1495 points

Theres my 2 cents, hope this helps you out

O and i forgot to mention:

Option 4:
+Have Arjac join a squad of (3) Terminators but thats 278 points so you'll have to cut 8 points somewhere =/

I've see Arjac and Logan Grimnar Chew through a army of 2000 pt imperial guardsman by themselves, arjac is very formidable

I like the lazorback idea. However, Dashyl, I am taking the Wolf guard as pack leaders- sorry, always forget to mention that!

Also, Martyr, I love long fangs, but this list is better midfield. for those things we don't want to get close to? Normally, I'd just charge them suicidally, but sometimes that doesnt work.

Anyway, so the longs fangs sound nice, as do options 1 and 4 after hearing feedback. Does anyone else like Arjac? He's also an excuse for me to buy WG termies- those are some nice models!

Well after reading about you taking the wolf guard as pack leaders id recommend putting them into terminator armor which burns up 90 points right there and you could field arjac as a squad leader instead 1 of those wolf guard. If you do field arjac your looking about about 218 points so you only have about 53 left to worry about. With those 53 you could probably give your vindicators or something else another weapon, or you can give all your wolf guard meltabombs.

On the plus side Arjac does come with a strength 10 ap 1 ranged weapon with 12in range if im correct, he gets 6 attacks on the assault, and since he is a unique character I think he can leave squads. Sorry Arjac is kinda my favorite unique character.

Dashyl, the problem with having the Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor is that they will no longer be able to ride in the Rhinos with the Grey Hunters.

Arjac is a monster that will make most everything cry foul when he rolls into close combat with them (not to mention his 6" railgun...doesn't sound right, I know). I usually run him in a Pod or Land Raider with a bunch of other Terminators for wound allocation and the absolute destruction of anything they touch.

In all honesty, while Space Wolves love to punch above their belt, they also know that they really can't punch some big baddies in the face without being mauled.

Examples: C'tan...you can never assault the deceiver...the Nightbringer is nigh invincible...Swarmlord eats marines for Breakfast and oh yeah...Thunderwolf Cavalry make you want to bring more guns to the table...

Just my take.

Ever attach Arjac to a squad of Grey Hunters? He now counts as a troop choice and is nearly impossible to get off of an objective. I suggest the squad with Arjac as a pack leader take a Lazerback (seeing they cant embark with Arjac attached anyways... Then you just use your vehicles as an armored shield while your one squad just runs behind... On a fun note with a squad of guys running behind your tanks, BA jump infantry cant shoot at your rear armor (not that 11 is much better than 10... but if they tried to shoot at your rear armor your troops would grant cover) but hey

No, it is only a 6" range.... but then again, who else do you know of that can throw their thunderhammer period?! I just wish it's ability as a thunderhammer still worked at putting a model's initiative to one and/or giving a vehicle a auto shaken result

Breaking Something Valuable

Sorry for not answering in a while, internet's been down...

Right now, I've been looking at a third vindicator and some GH in a Lazorback, thenstill having some extra points- maybe giving Bjorn a twin linked lascannon.
Also looking at that ARjac and bloodclaws idea- looks fun! In a droppod, even more so!

I know the lack of long fangs makes some cringe, and normally I don't leave home without 'em, but firstly this is a (mostly) mech army, and second, it is also a midfield army, and even if things can't shoot at distance, closer up the bignasty's are toast. Actually, so are swarms- 3 S10 pieplates make Ork and Foot IG cry!

On another note, I've started painting after getting my rear in gear, yay! unfortunately, the monotony and the fact that I've got a shaky hand (this is my first timepainting models) is getting me down. Hopefully, tanks are better!

I always run a blob of death with 13 Blood Claws, Wolf Priest and Arjac in a Land Raider Crusader...it is stupid fun and the weight of attacks is marvelous on a whole new level.

Also, having Arjac in the Squad scares away any big nasties that decide they want to come out and play.

Arjac sounds great. I don't care for BC's. GH always!!
As long as my LF are not too close together, They seem to last longer than Vindicators and Preditors. It's the opponent going after the most powerful (threats)vehicles. Missile launchers are real handy for Pounding threats at any range. A few turn 1 kills, make the assaulting easier.

So no love for the bikes or landspeeders? would save me a ton of cash, seeing as I've yet to purchase any. I guess that the long fangs or arjac are my best bet, then. I still htink that it would be pretty ridiculous to throw 3 strenght 10 pieplates at the enemy army. The looks on their faces...

Actualy you can get the bikes and speeders sort of cheep, just by Ravenwings, two of them gets you 12 bikes, 2 Speeders and 2 Attack Bikes. You can aslo use the extra "Robed" Bike legs for TWC.

Good choice. any transport for them?

Are you saying that you are aginst 3 Vindicators? I am not a big fan of templates. You have to be careful where you shoot them. You don't want to Nuke one of your assaulting units. They do kick ass But they have a large target painted on their side, If you opponent is smart.
I have seen 2 win a game aginst a ork mob army.

I was hoping you would post your finial list. If it's already up, where can I find it.
