I was sitting and painting my army when a thought occured to me. If the command squad has a vox and another squad has a vox, why can't the commander just use the vox casters to relay orders? It makes sense doesn't it? Not only that but 12" just doesn't seem very far to give an order to someone else, especially if everyone has vox links.

well the commander probably just can't see the people who a father away, or more likely, what problems they're having. plus the soldiers off yonder aren't scared by the boss because he's so far away. Usakar Creed can of course process the battlefield information coming in with so muchy efficiency that he can easily obtain a grasp on nearby events (plus he's respected)

for normal leaders the fact that his soldiers are trying at all to kill the enemy is enough for them

Plus relaying orders manually like that, with everyone fighting giant bugs eating your face or horrible traitor Marines with bits of your buddies impaled all over them, sounds like a horribly twisted and more malignant version of Whisper Down the Lane that could only make the situation even worse...

Before the IG had special orders it used to be that the Vox Casters would allow any squad within a certain range of the PCS or CCS to use the highest leadership avalible in that bubble. I think with the new orders though the Vox Casters are better off using the Commanders leadership when testing to see if they want to do what their told. As for the range thing you have to realize how easy it is to block radio signals (especially by accident) and then remeber that the army your fighting is probably doing it.

Balance. Vox-casters are cheap right now...why bother putting an expensive piece of equipment on a squishy model?

GW like the idea of having command units influencing troops that are near them. Most, if not all, IG codices have had some kind of leadership bubble rule, where command units can influence troops that are near to them. It encourages IG to squish up into close formations.

In the last IG codex the vox caster allowed a unit to benefit from a commander LD whether he was within 12” or not and it resulted in IG being deployed independently across the board just like any other army. It was a bit dull.

The current iteration, where a vox caster works more like a megaphone than a radio is bit silly, but it does encourage IG to play a little differently, at least.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
