I am thinking of starting necromunda, but is it any good? The concept sounds fun, but are there still any people who play it?

Old, outdated & poorly done imo. Personally I tried a game with my friend and hated the system. On a side note if you are looking for a small scale skirmish game try malifaux.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

I've never tried it, but on a similiar note, how about Inquistormunda?

The rules are a little clunky in places, but it's a good game once you get used to it.

Anyone who played 2nd edition 40K would have an easier time picking it up, as the rules were largely the same, just with more detail added for Necro.

Well, I've looked at starting it a few times and never really bothered. Some of the models are nice, but some of them are pretty outdated too. They're not the cheapest things out there either.

Balance-wise, there are definitely some issues. From what I've gleaned, a Vaan-Sar gang tends to clean up to the point where it's nearly unstoppable once it gets rolling while running a Golaith gang is akin to trying to ice skate uphill. Those are the two ends of the spectrum, everything else tends to be in between.

Rules-wise, it harkens back to 2nd Ed 40K somewhat with the hit and save modifiers and those rules everyone misses (yes, I'm talking about you Overwatch). Basically, it could have evolved into something pretty nice to work with, but just never did rather like many of the Specialist Games.

In terms of content, there's a descent amount on GW's site, so you don't have to buy the books. If you really want to try it, pull down the pdf's and give it a go with some models you already have. That way, if you don't like it, the only things your really out are bandwidth and time.

The other thing you can try are the Thunderhawk Down rules the Warmasters folks put out last year. http://www.warmasterschallenge.com/40kSkirmish
Similar game idea, but with more of a standard 40K angle.

Like it

Have started NecroMondays at our afterschool club and it is so popular that 40k hasn't had a look in since!

Van Saar clean up sounds about right. Wonder why our WAAC kid chose them as his gang

ditto Thunderhawk Down. will check it out.
There is also Death Squads

Necromunda is simple to play, very intuitive and has a whole lot of luck involved. The amount of luck involved, the range of dubious strategies possible and the fairly shoddy basic campaign system means that as a competitive game it’s pretty mediocre. But every game produces tales of insane heroism and incredible incompetence. You will find yourself cheering for that plucky juve that always gets shot but simply refuses to die, and cursing that one ganger that always, always misses the important shot. Played in the right spirit it’s really, really good fun.

The models are of varying quality and can be hard to get your hands on. Gear loadouts will change as the game continues and the basic models can be a pain to convert. With that in mind you might want to think about proxying a different range of miniatures into the game.

Terrain is the other issue – the game works best with a lot of multi-level buildings, especially when there’s catwalks between them. You’ll probably need more than the average, and for a proper board it needs to be all industrial structures and buildings. Terrain really makes this game, so it’s not worth skimping on. The good news is that any terrain you build can be switched into 40K games.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

It is an awesome game funwise. competitively not so much as there are a lot of variables and random stuff. Its really a character game in that ou fllow your gang as they grow into hardened fighters with individually skills specialties and weapons. we used to play it at our game store and switch off every week with 40k(all 40k guys started a gang) and as a group with a bunch of different gangs in to fight it is REALLY FUN. a lot more about gaks and grins and laughing at occarences than 40k. Yeah the win everything guys will go with van saar, we had a guy like that but you can work them over just like everyone else. it just depends on the long term path of your gang. I took redemptionists and got to where i had 2-3 gangs teaming up on me at one time. every gang can get big and bad, orlock is really underrated. But strictly fun wise IMO it is better than 40k.

I love it. I had a group that meet at the store on Thursdays, and all we played was Necromunda. We played 40k on the weekends at someone elses house.

What I like is you can get 2-3 games in in the time it takes to play a 2000pt 40k game. The rules are different, but I don't think they are chunky. Not once you played a few times.

Also you can get a decent sized gang for about $100 and not really need to buy any more.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

Probably work

I just tried it Saturday. It was fun enough, though the rules are pretty foreign as I started quite a while after 2nd edition. I made a Delaque clan that had 9 guys. By the end of it, I had 4 guys who hadn't either died or been captured. My d6 curse is not restricted to D&D/40k, sadly. We're planning on giving it another go though. Definitely worth a look.
