ive been putting togather my chapter of atheist marines. theyve rejected the impotent emperor and his horridly evil imperium and gone into buisness for the intrests of the people and not the leaders of the people, anyways i use a demon hunter list just because i find its more intresting than just using a space marine list since i know 1001 space marine players.
ive been working recently on making a squad of specialized marines with sledgehammers and boltguns and have it count as some gk space marines and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make the sledge hammers. i messed around for a while with cutting the heads for the hammers from foam and cutting some wooden rods the right size to fit inside but i couldnt make it look right.

Plastic rods, and scuply or GS for the hammer heads. Odd that you are not just doing a Traitor Legion btw.

If they have turned away from the emperor's light, they may as well be traitor legion. His armies will treat them as such anyway.
Marines ARE atheists anyway. They do not worship the Emperor as a GOD, but merely venerate him as the creator of their primarchs. A subtle difference, but an important one.
Plastic rod for the hammer heads (and shafts). It comes in different thicknesses and shapes (and in strip, likewise).

well this army started as a side project, i used to play eldar but i got really sick and tired of how clean and perfect eldar units need to look when you customize them. so i started buying some used imperial models when i'd see them and really the only way i can fit them all under the same banner is to do a DH list. like i have some customized guardsmen and a chimera and i have a bunch of marine models ive done for heavy battle damage and heavy modifications to their tanks that would get them executed if they were in the imperium.
edit: the marines dont just honor the emeror. they profess that their faith in him will protect them (and keep their sergeants from being shot in the head) granted the emperor is a very real supernatural being in their universe but hes hardly a god.
also i realize they will be seen as a traitor leigon to the armies of man, this is more of a distinction they make for themselves. since they dont worship chaos gods and the like theyre more of apostates but one can hardly expect the ordo malleus to see it that way.

If they have "gone into buisness for the intrests of the people and not the leaders of the people" why not make them turncoats working for the Tau.
Instead of an Inquisitor leading (like DH) use a Tau Ethereal or something like that.
While it is near unthinkable that marines would work with the Tau - it was unthinkable that they would turn to chaos... and look how that turned out.
Plus - it give you access to some interesting options... like SM scouts with Tau sniper rifles etc. Terminators with Tau Battlesuit weapons etc.
Could be fun. Just 2 things :-
1. have fun
2. don't forget to balance it out so that others will want to play your army

The easiest and coolest way is to use shoulder pads. Glue two together and then plasticard the gap in front. Glue that onto a suitable pole or I used a standard bearer arm and presto, giant hammer.

i like that hammer conversion above ^ i may have to do something like that. i am a little hesatant to make my guys soldiers of the tau since from my reading it seems like the tau are up to something sinister, however this does not mean i dont have any tau weapons. i have a guardsmen squad ive converted to give them just about any weapon they could lay hands on (i figured if i was a guardsmen who just left the imperium the first thing i'd try to do is replace my terrible flashlight gun) so they all have a mishmash of tau carbines and shuriken catapults and kroot rifles and one has a shotgun.
