Hi,

So i've only been playing 40k for a little while. I have a Space Wolves Army and my mate who I play against has a Blood Angels Army.

I'm really stuggling to beat him but getting better all the time.

Anyway one of the main things he keeps doing to me that i can't seem to avoid is move his barl preditor right before the game starts and then if he has the first turn he gets right up to one of my scoring troops (grey Hunters) and kills them all with the flamer, so thats an important troop out the game before I can anything.

So does anyone know of something I can do to stop this from happening?

any help will be appreciated

well a couple of things. First of all its baal not barl.

Now as for you problems there are a couple solutions
First of you can put your troops in transports denying him the ability to hit them at all
2nd you can use terrain to block off access to your models
3rd you can space your models out far enoguh that he only can get hits on a few
or lastly you could always place them in reserve. You dont need to hold the objective on turn 1.

hope this helps.

I think there could be a couple of ways to eliminate a Baal Predator as a Space Wolves player....

1. Make sure there is a Rune Priest attached to the squad of Grey Hunters that he so loves to sneak up on... and make sure one of the two psychic powers you have is... [Murderous Hurricane] it won't actually damage the vehicle, but the secondary effects have a chance to immobilize it!

2. Drop Pod Assault... Give those Grey Hunters of yours the fighting chance they deserve and Drop Pod right next to that bad boy opening up with 1-2 Meltagun shots at the side or rear armor, at the very least you should penetrate the armor, and will most likely stop it from at the very least firing for one turn...

3. If you like to run the full squad of 10 Grey Hunters for the special weapons, do the best you can to keep a Venerable Dreadnaught with Saga of the Majesty nearby... you get to reroll morale checks... and a Baal Predator will come no where near a Dreadnaught, unless this friend is over-confident.

Im sure there are more ways, but those are just a couple I can think of off the top of my head... they options intended to rid the Baal Predator outright, as there are ways to avoid it without gunning straight for it too...

I give all 3 of my 10 man Grey Hunter squads a Rhino, and start them off in them. OK, your opponent might be able to penetrate AV 11, but even if he does destroy it, it's your shooting phase before his next one, so make sure you melta him to itsie bitsie little bits. You do take meltaguns in your Grey Hunters squads right?
If you do decide to footslog them, remember that keeping them behind a wall or barricade won't grant you a cover save against his template weapons. I would also advocate Burntbeard's suggestions of spreading them out, and having a runepriest attached to them, with livng lightning. If you manage to get round the side or even the rear of his Baal , he's gonna wince at d6 str 7 shots pumping into him.

Stay back a wee bit, keep your guys in a transport and spread out if it gets popped!

As stated, rhinos should help alot. AV 11 v. S6 means he needs a 5 to glance. Pretty good odds. Then, if you have a 2x melta or a melta/WG combi-melta in the squad, he loses a Baal on your turn. Good trade.

Things like Long Fangs are generally better targets for the Baal, since they like to hide in the backfield spamming missiles from cover. These are a bit tougher to protect since putting them in a transport reduces their damage output. But, if you keep them towards the center of the board with some meltas nearby, it still works pretty well.

I am curious, how many Baals is he fielding and what else is he taking besides Baals?

Rhinos help, but they are not fool-proof. He probably has some long range anti-tank, so he can move up his baal, pop the rhino with something else, and then flame the dismounted (and close together) content.

A better use of the rhino might be to place it in front of the grey hunters. He can't scoutmove closer than 12" of your models, and he can only move 12" and fire his inferno cannon. That should protect your grey hunters, and they can then in your turn enter the rhinos and go up the field.

Well there are 3 main things you should do.

1) Put all your troops in transports. ALL of them. This gives protection and mobility.

2) Try to get first turn. If you win the roll-off. Go first and drop pod assault a dread right in front of the Baal. Fire a multimelta, if you succeed, you blow it to bits, if you dont, it cant get around you for another turn anyway.

3) If you dont get first turn, that generally means that he depolyes first. Dont put any foot slogging squads (not that there should be any of those) within the Baal's movement range. If you cant get away from it, put a dreadnought inbetween it and your squad. He will not be able to get close enough to flame the whole squad, and be destroyed next turn if he tries. Even if he doesnt try, blow it up anyway. Thats a 115 point vehicle that acomplished nothing for its points, and he is now playing at a 115 point handicap.

I hate hard counters. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, I hate playing any of the factions because no matter what you choose you might as well not deploy against your hard counter. I want to use a gun. Rock, paper, and scissors could all probably still beat gun, but gun will never feel like a game is a lost cause.

What was the question, doesn't matter just field a Dreadnaught and it should solve the problem... a Venerable Dread would be best hehe

as well as the baarl he also has rhino and land raider redeemer. for the tank side of things as well as lots death company and sanguine guards (i think thats what they are, flying terminators that can score as he has a special character).

I suppose i am lacking in the whole transport side of things as I only have a land raider redeemer and i can't use that as a dedicated transport, but I tend to fill that with wolf guard terminators with wolf claws, thunder hammer/storm shields once the game has started.

I will look to add some more stuff transport at some point, but just needed some tactics for the interim. I do have allot that can take out tanks just nothing to prevent him from sneaking up with his baarl before the game starts.

Put your troops in transports, as above. Also, for his army, sounds like you need a few plama cannons. Buh Bye Sanguinary Guard. Buh Bye Death Company.

This is a risky move, but if you are foot sloging.
Give the Grey Hunters a Wolf Guard Pack Leader with a Storm Shield, and somthing like a Thunder Hammer.
If you put him off to one side of your Grey Hunters, he will most likly attrack the Flame Storm Cannon, this and setting up the pack in a 2 deep spread out gun line pattern will reduce the number he can hit with any one weapon. and then have a good chance of survial.

First learn how to properly spell the word Baal. Second invest in some rhinos. It's not rocket science.
