If I'm understanding the way this formation is written, any super heavy VEHICLE may be taken- so thunderhawks, titans, they count for this formation, right?

Yep, exactly right.

Just remember the auto penetrating hit that could potentially blow you up....

That's only if you deploy it on the board at the beginning though, if you reserve it it's ok.

really......So if i keep my Shadowsword in reserve it doesn't take the Pen hit at the start of the game? SWEET!!!!

Indeed, it says it in the rule for the super heavy formation, just have to read the second half of the special rules, "large target".
