i am playing IG at the moment but i want to move on to chaos and start a tzeentch based army, just looking for help on the best way to load it out as i dont really know much about chaos.

Well first. Are you talking chaos deamons?? or chaos space marines?

Well if doing 1k sons then Rhinos with combi-meltas are a must. Rhinos are a must anyways but combi-meltas are nice to have on them since 1k sons lack good AT. If going the Tzeentch CSM route then again Rhinos are a must. The squads i run have a PF and 2 meltas. I like to run winged DPs with warptime and WoC for HQs and heavy support for me varies from Preds to Vindies. As of late i have been running bikers with meltas with great success. They fill in the hole of delivering quick AT that the 1k sons need so they can disembark and unload AP3 bolters on. So far out of 6 games they have only had one game where the bikers havent made their points back. They are quite pricey but i think worth it....so far.

How do you normally equip your bikers. Do you go down the 3 biker, 2 X melta + icon route for 129 points?

i didnt evan consider combi things i will invest in them for sure, how many squads of 1k sons would make a good sized army? i was thinking winged DPs with the mark of tzeentch. can you still buy "gift from the gods"? for the DPs? and i was thinking lash as well.

Firstly i would buy a codex because you never know you could change what sort of chaos god you want to follow and if you do choose tzeentch thats fine i would recommend thousand sons and maybe the axile ahriman as an HQ

@LDOG NZ i have read a friends one and i have read all the fluff and i am im set on Tzeentch, im asking all this as money is tight at the moment and i just wana get a grasp on how good of an army a tzeentch based army would before i splash out on unnessasery minis.

Well if you take MoT on the DP you cant have Lash of Submission on him as that is a Slaanesh only power. Havent heard of 'gift from the gods' maybe you were thinking 'Gift of Chaos'? That power can change people into Chaos Spawn is really fun and what Ahriman is best at as he can cast it three times in a single turn on whoever he wants even when locked in HtH. It isnt as powerful as it sounds because you have to be within 6" to cast the spell plus you have to roll OVER the victims toughness.
Personally i use alot of Winds of Chaos as it provides a little in the ways of AT plus provides a little in horde control. Points wise 1k sons are expensive because with each squad you have to have an Aspiring Sorcerer. The 1k sons cant take any special weapons so be prepared to be at a disadvantage. I suggest mixing in a squad or two of CSMs for the versatility of the CSMs.

the main reason i wanted to start chaos was for the "gift of chaos" i think is a cheese rule that will get on peoples nerves Ahriman sounds like a good HQ choice then, mixing in CSMs sounds like it needs to be done i was wondering about that tbh or i might take havocs for a bit of fire power or take bikes as you said before. i still might take a DP just because

If you're making a "Fun" list, Ahriman and 1k Sons is a great choice. They're strong enough to feel like you've got a force on the board.

Biggest thing about Chaos is you pretty much have to Mech up. Plan on purchasing a Rhino for every troop squad you take. Plan on filling out your Heavy slots. Plan on filling out your HQ (w/ a prince). Elites and Fast have ok choices, but they tend to be what you sacrifice first for points.

yeah every CSM army i have seen play all had rhinos for evert troop choice, plus im a IG player i know allllll about troop transpots. im still unsure on the HQ do i go ahriman or DP or both, then do i run bikes or normal CSM or evan jetpack guy (rapters)?

Like i said winged DP with warptime and Winds of chaos is a good HQ choice pricey yes but does his job well. If anything i would go for CSM troops instead of all the fancy stuff right now. CSM are scoring units and are pretty good in HtH plus they deliver on AT. Not to mention that both raptors and bikers are expensive money-wise. Bikers are 3 for $40 IIRC and raptors(jetpackers) are 5 for $45.

i may go DP for the time being but get Ahrimen later down the line when i can expand a lil more and get the hang of physic attacks. and the standard CSM seem like the best plan to start with, seems like i have a basic plan now thanks

Vanilla CSM with an Icon of Chaos Glory is still one of the most effective units for its cost in WH40K. I'd only recommend one unit of TSons - they're wonderfully tough but obnoxiously expensive, since you have to buy a sorc for them. If you're going for icons of tzeentch in all of yuor squads, make sure you bulk them up to make your points back.

i will take that into account, for smaller games i will stick with one unit of 1ksons but bigge ones i will run a few more squads. i think i will mark every unit with tzeencth if i can just for unification sakes.

Too bad you can't buy 1k sons heads separately. 42 bucks for 9 marines is too steep. Just use regular CSM and dress em up all nice.

Ahh thanks Samus that reminds me. If you go to some different bits sites you can find heads but they are a little pricey. Last time i looked they were $1.50 a head or if you are good at conversions and dont mind a little snipping work go to sciborminiatures.com and look for egyptian head dresses ,or something close to that, and they sell just the head dress. If i could link you to it i would.

I'd take 2 squads of 9 Thousand Sons. They look fantastic at the battle field, if painted well.
Mount them into Rhinos.
They are good at shooting MEQ units but rather weak in cc.
Therefore I'd back them up with a cc oriented unit like Khorne Berzerkers in a Rhino.
A DP should be mandatory. HS is personal preference.

Because the sons use lightning a lot.

i think i going 2 units of 9 1ksons in rhinos with CSM in rhinos and a DP then add more if points allow but thats my basic choice

The Tomb Kings Ushabti Vulture looks great as a Tzeentch DP stand in. Then if you look up griffon wings from the Brettonian line they are the perfect size for the Ushabti to have wings. Now if you get this model it will be a little smaller but not much in the way of height difference. Then just be sure to buy a MC stand for it and you are all set.

i was looking at the tomb kings and did think they would be good but i wasnt sure on the size but if its an ok fit then i will look into that further, nothing agains the DP out but for me its not right.

I might just have to get one now. Considering That model with the wings is the price of a normal DP

Yeah actually ends up a bit cheaper. I have 2 and nobody has had a single problem with them. It stands 1/2 an inch smaller and isnt as wide but you can counter the height with some built up terrain on the base. The actual bulk of the current DP compared to the Ushabti is what makes it seem so small.
