Hey all, been looking to get into Warhammer 40k for a long and I'm finally ready to take the dive - I haven't got an Army yep but I'm defferently thinking of going with the Imperial Guard. Just wondering what would be the best units for me to buy to start out with. Hopefully I can meet people off the site and get into some great games

Welcome to Dakka Dakka.

Best way to start (although generic, but it's a good foundation) is 1 HQ and 2 Troops, other more knowing of the IG can help you out with this, as I am clueless with their units.

Thanks, I'm going to drive to the local GW shop near me and ask around, I just dont want to be buying stuff I dont need

Just say, "I need a HQ and two troops for my IG army". Don't ask, "what should I get?", as my friend asked this for his lizardmen army(which was at 1k pts) and the guy suggested the battalion,and this, and that..
EDIT:What that above means is basically don't walk in being the noob of the store, and they think you'll buy anything they tell you.

Definatly two of the shock troopers, and as for the books the IG codex you can..download it for free on scribd before you buy.

If your going to do Imperial Guard you will need the Codex to start with.
I still recon the Battlion Box sets a good place to start, 1 HQ, 2 Troop if you build Vet's, a heavy weapons squad and a Sentinal. Not as good as when it included a Russ but still value for money.

Yep I went ahead and bought that, going to go back to the GW shop next week to have a battle, got my head in the rule book now to get the hang of things.
