I enjoy utilizing the sm thunderfire cannon. Especially with the techmarines bolster defences. Now; I've come to thinking - And I feel the rules aren't specific, concerning how artillery units gain cover saves?

You are correct, there is no clear ruling for it. INAT ruled that if 50% of the unit is in cover as normal then the gun also benefits.

There doesnt need to be a specific ruling: an artillery unit is a unit. You determine if the unit is at least 50% in cover to determine if tyhe whole unit is in cover.
Now, how does the techmarine gain cover? As normal
How does the artillery piece get cover? As a vehicle.
So if 1 of the 2 members is in cover then the unit gains cover. In general this means sticking the techmarine in area terrain is all that is needed.

I've played based on what i read, which is to ignore the artillary models and use the joined unit to determine range/cover/LoS
".. the platform model itself is always ignored, including when measuring ranges to that unit, and when counting models in the unit. It is essentially a marker; assume that the gun is actually carried by the crew member firing it"
I'vemisplaced my BRB and im pulling this out of the Eldar codex (under the guardian weapon platform entry on pg 39)

Guardian Heavy Weapons platforms are not artillery. They're a marker for a heavy weapon being used by a Guardian.
Artillery units are made up of one or more infantry models and one or more weapons carriages, which are essentially lite-vehicles.
The weapon is a part of the unit, and is not ignored the way Guardian HWP's are.

The way we play it is how everyone else here is playing it. If 50% is in cover then your good. So putting it in area terrain puts the techmarine in cover so cover save. If in the open but the cannon is obscured then a cover save.
