Im starting a new bit of ig fluff for an army. The basic idea is that it is a pre guard army with only pre-M35 and technologies from other worlds. It was "lost in the warp(I know this is a stale idea and nobody likes it but I thought that it not being a lost sm chapter would fair better) near the end of the great crusade. It reappears on the edge of the eastern fringes. Im trying to find a way to have an imperial army group(ig +if) of about 500 million men and about 3000 loyal(still loyal to the emprah) they make contact with the imperium and...

idk where to go from their so lets make a little story here

500 million is a lot even for a guard army group, maybe a crusade to retake territories lost during the vandire heresies since that is a fun time for the Imperium.

Maybe in the warp most of the troops went insane or just died thanks to nasties the men of this surviving regiment (your one by the way) or survivng bits of regiments saw a saint or vision of the Emperor and when they came out of the warp they took control of a few of the ships with the survivng naval crews and contact the Imperium from there.

After contacting the Imperium an Inquisitor came to check they were loyal and untainted and after being thouroughly checked they were all declared free of taint and sent with the Emperors blessing to a system to help retake it.

Arriving in the system they find the imperial forces under heavy attack and jump right in catching the nemy off guard and rallying the remaining forces and in a series of deadly and blistering counter-attacks they annhialate them(you choose the baddies here just pick your least favorite army or a friends if you want a background between his and your armies) after this they are highly decorated and gain a reputation for zelous fury and dedication the the Emperor.

They move on to another planet and during the landing phase the enemy (again you choose) suprise attacks and cuts the regiment off from support. The regiment then takes refuge in a nearby city while freindly naval forces try to fight their way through the blockade to the city. For a few years the regiment gets whittled down to the last and most zelous and dedicated men left, the enemies attacking them are dismayed that they haven't broken their foe and begin to lose heart, the seige end with a hufe battle in which the regiment is all but wiped out for the cost of the entire enemy force when the friendly navy arrives just in time to secure the planet. The general/warmaster in charge is so impressed he grants settlement rights to the regiment and they settle down.

A few generations later the planet is called to raise a new regiment many aren't called up and declare that they had been guided there in their dreams by a sanit/vision of the Emperor which had been recorded to be seen by the original regiment this is seen as a good start to the new regiment.

Ok so it's not so much background as well very far-background but you can pick and mix whatever you like with that i could try for some names but i don't know if you have them yet or not.
