Okay, a friend of mine informed me that when your own units fall back due to a failed morale check, they do so towards their own deployment zone board edge, rather than towards the closet board edge which could very well be the enemy board edge. Isn't that wrong?

Page 45 of the small red book states that units fall directly back (and over all terrain) towards their deployment table edge.
It goes on to say that only when you are playing a mission that gives no specific edge to a player, that the unit then falls back to the closest available.

And that doesn't apply to any of the three BRB deployments.
