The sink.

I've been using Simple Green and Super Clean to strip some of my minis. They both do a good job, except I can't get the black primer off of my chaos marines. Any suggestions?

Do you really need to strip the primer? I mean, the point of primer is to be hard to remove, so that your paint doesn't chip off. I imagine it would be pretty difficult to get all that off.

Simple green won't work, at least not in my experience anyway. (I use simple green BECAUSE it doesn't take off the primer).

huh... I used simplegreen on my land raider crusader... stripped the primer off too (in most places).

let it soak for 3 days though.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I let my minis soak for 2 days and called it good. I was hoping to re-prime some of my chaos marines dragon red and make them word bearers (if dragon red ever comes out).

Bah, just get a red flat or satin paint from the autoparts store and work from there.

Krylon makes a few shades of red, as does Duplicolor and Rust-o-leum.

Some black paints sort of stain the plastic. If the paint isnt in clumps or obscuring detail thats probly what happened. I just primed over when it happens and havent had any problems.

With a lighter prime like grey or white, the darker remnants in the crevices can actually work like shading (just trying to see a postive side lol)

If the primer strips easily with SG it's time to invest in new primer.

Just saying.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I let my Nids soak a couple of weeks in Dettol. The plastic is still stained dark grey from the primer.

I don't think it matters. I will just prime with my usual grey.

PS: What Fateweaver said. Primer is a different composition to acrylic paint and shouldn't come off the model so easily.

The plastic could be stained, like others have suggested. If the paint is still on (should be simple to tell, upon close inspection), any chance Krylon Fusion or a similar plastic-bonding paint was used?

Either way, as long as detail isn't obscured, I wouldn't worry about it.

GW black primer as well as krylon will cause the minis to be stained no matter what you do it seems..I had some ravenwing i was striping cause of a horrible paint job..Left some models in simple green for a few days and they stripped but was stained. Left some landspeeders in simple green for 8 months cause I forgot them in my storage room and still stained but otherwise fine.

I know what you mean about black primer. The only thing I have found to reliably remove it from plastic miniatures is brake fluid but I dont recommend it. Brake fluid should not be put down the drain in even small quantities. Unfortunately Simple Green will not remove the primer unless some heat is applied and even then there is no guarrantee. The other issue is that Simple Green weakens the integrity of the primer so if you prime over it again your may have issues with paint sticking in the long term. The other issue is that soke of the black primer may come off and leave small "ridges" on the model. It sucks. I have had some success weakening the primer with SG and then using Castrol Super Clean afterwards. The problem with that approach is that CSC often leaves white residue behind that is even harder to remove than the primer.

Moral of the story: once plastic is primed black it is never quite the same.

I had simular trouble, however I find LA's totally awesome works wonders.

Note, one thing I found is that after leaveing a model in simple green form quite awhile and then switching to the totally awesome will result in the plastic stained from the primer.

however if you use the LA's totatlly awesome from the start it does not stain the plastic.

Brown Dettol works for me. 4-5 hours should do. But I dilute it 50:50 because i've had models melt before leaving them in straight Dettol for over a day. Also make sure to scrub off the paint/primer in dilute Dettol, otherwise you get annoying blobs of paint adhering everywhere.
