We all know and love the standard Force Organistation Chart, 2xHQ, 6xTroops etc, but I had a thought inspired by spearhead of all things to create a list of variant FOC's for use in friendly matches where "both" players have agreed to use them "instead" of the standard FOC. You will notice that although I'm removing 3 slots I'm only giving 2 back, this is trying to stop certain armies being completely uber if they happen to favour a certain field like fast attack while still allowing for a balanced bonus

FOC Name: Best of the Best
FOC Cost: +75pts
FOC Bonus: Up to 1 Elite choice may have the Furious Charge special rule for the duration of the game
FOC Description: The main army has been badly decimated by the enemy or the reserves you were expecting have not yet arrived. Whatever the reason the army has found itself without the support of most of its army and now only the "Best of the Best" remain to tow the line and stand their ground against the enemy.
2x HQ (1 compulsory)
6x Troop (2 compulsory)
5x Elite. (4 compulsory)
1x Fast. (0 compulsory)
1x Heavy (0 compulsory)

FOC Name: Flight or Die
FOC Cost: +50pts
FOC Bonus: Up to 1 Fast (non vehicle) choice may have the Scout special rule for the duration of the game
FOC Description: Scouts have detected the enemy approaching far quicker than expected and so a pre-emptive strike is required. Leaving the heavy vehicles and cumbersom weapons behind that will only slow them down a fast and mobile force set out to meet the enemy head on.
2x HQ (1 compulsory)
6x Troop (2 compulsory)
3x Elite. (0 compulsory)
5x Fast. (4 compulsory)
0x Heavy (0 compulsory)

FOC Name: Hold the Line!
FOC Cost: +50pts
FOC Bonus: Up to 1 Heavy choice may use the Bolster Defence rule and increase the cover save of a single ruin by +1
FOC Description: The position is about to be over run, and with your forces either retreating to regroup or desperately trying to reach the position in time the army is forced to fend for itself and hold the line to give your forces more time to reach them. As the enemy close your forces have set in ready to meet them with the biggest and best weapons of war your army can muster.
2x HQ (1 compulsory)
6x Troop (2 compulsory)
3x Elite. (0 compulsory)
0x Fast. (0 compulsory)
5x Heavy (4 compulsory)

Some of these might be fun for a scenario

These have a few issues. First is that some armies have decidedly poor troop choices but distinctly better choices (per point investment) in troops than in other categories (eldar spring to mind). Second I am inclined to agree that they sound like special scenarios.

However lets play along. Id personally make fewer compulsory choices and change what unit types are scoring. At the same time flexibility should come at a price of its own and not just the price to make a squad get gurious cjarge (btw giving fueious charge to a unit of really strong melee units cost the same as the weaker units in IG?)

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Special Scenarios ++ but I almost think that is hinted at in the "FOC Description", these should maybe expanded to each include a deployment method special rules etc.?

Yes, ideally these suit special scenario's more and as I described, would be with both players consent and both players would have to play by them and would hopefully logically use one that better suits their army.

Also, I had bumped up the price of the Elite FOC on the grounds that Space Marines would be extremely dangerous with furious Charge than IG would for example, but logically IG might be better off choosing either the Fast or Heavy FOC ones. Just like the spearhead rules, not all of them will suit every army type.

Thanks for the feedback, I will be play testing soon and will use your responses here and my results from the play test to fine tune it to something that could be usable by all players as an addition to the game.

Cheers

What these mean to me.

Best of the Best: The Bonus is useless to orks since all of them have Furious Charge already...but, five elites?

Lootas. Lootas friggin EVERYWHERE! All those Deffguns....I think I may cry.

Flight or Die: KoS lists everywhere just squeed. A Stromboy army is actually possible!

Hold the Line!: Kan Walls have never been bigger! With two Troop Dreads that's....SEVENTEEN Walkers. Excuse me, I need to change my pants.

My point overall being that for casual games these kind of scenario fights are a pretty cool idea. May take some getting use to though, as alot of people won't maximize on its potential the first time.

Time ta make sometin' fun!
