Lettering will probably look off, as the text would normally be way too small to see. Sadly, as much as I despise tribal and its ilk, that may be your best bet, as it is dark and visually contrasts with the skin a ton.

Also Tanith are known to have blue tribally tats. You could do lettering but use a very very small brush and stick with things like "USMC"/"PDF" etc.

I suggest a fat brush with a fine tip, sable ideally, if you do go forward with lettering. You want a large well that will hold a lot of watered down paint, or it will come out funky.

Or you could cheat and get a paint pen! Or use some of the Stencils on skin.

I'm planning on using an ink pen - not a ball point, but one of the flow ones. I've done it before to make hazard marks and whatnot and it works quite well.

My veteran catachan IG is going to look like a biker gang when I'm done with them. Actually, I"m just trying to follow the fluff, but I'm hoping to give at least one guy "sleeves".

Don't use black; use more of a grey. Tattoos fade over time, and are seldom straight up flat black. Shadow Grey is a good base for a tattoo color. Now, if you were doing something temporary like tribal warpaint, you could go nuts with saturated colors. If you're doing a tattoo, make sure it's got some grey or flesh in there to soften it.
