So, I just finished a game at my FLGS, and on the way out my friend and i swing by the GW section. I had been eyeing the space wolves models for a while, and finally decided to splurge on them. I have ten grey hunters assembled and painted, and now realize I have no idea what else to field them with. So, I ask you, what would be an effective 1000-1500 force of space wolves? I like the idea of drop pods and would love to work them in somehow. Advice?

MotWolfen and meltas every where you can. Talismans. Blackmane is an effective character with a large blood claw group. 2 GH units.

Drop Pods? Not IMHO.

A couple rhinos and they're a rather powerful SM infantry force. Check out the other lists.

Drop pods are good f everyone goes drop pods otherwise no.
Blackmane is pointless in a bloodclaw pack better to take a wolf priest if you want a character with them.
MotW is pretty badass though.

I'm not denying that a WP isn't a great add to BCs, but how is Rags pointless? Do his bonus attacks with them *not* stack? Checing the errata ...

Found it. No stacking. Still. Eh.

Yeah he's a baddass and gives the BC furious charge but they don't need it a WP is fine.
Better to put him with some Grey Hunters and he improves them much more.

The best way to build up an army is doing a 2:1 ratio. Meaning 2 Infantry units to 1 Vehicle. So 2 Grey Hunters 1 Razorback kit (works as a Rhino/Razorback whichever, you choose). Grey Hunters can work as Wolf Guard, can model Blood Claws if you like but the best way to do it is just fill out with Grey Hunters and a couple of H.Q.'s. The biggest issue though is how you play the game.

If you want to go armored fist, go for vehicles, if you want to do heavy gunline, you'll do a hybrid and so on.

you gotta play what you like or you won't be happy.

Aight, so i did some research, and came up with a list that looks fun. Tell me what you think!

TOTAL- 1497

HQ- 225

Wolf Lord- 225
-Wolf Claw
-Power fist
-Runic Armor
-Jump Pack
-Saga of the Warrior Born

Elites- 202

Wolf Guard Pack- 112
-x 3
-Power Fist x 2
-Mark of the Wulfen
-Storm Bolter

Wolf Scouts Pack- 90
-x 5
-Sniper Rifle x 5

Troops- 960

Grey Hunters- 375
-x 9
-Plasma Gun
-Power Fist
-Wolf Standard
-Mark of the Wolfen
-Drop Pod

Grey Hunters- 375
-x 9
-Plasma Gun
-Power Fist
-Wolf Standard
-Mark of the Wolfen
-Drop Pod

Blood Claws Pack-210
-x 9
-Flamer
-Plasma Pistol
-Power Fist
-Drop Pod

Fast Attack- 110

Skyclaw Assault Pack- 110
-x 5
-Flamer
-Mark of the Wulfen

The basic idea is the wolf guard split up, the 2 powerfists leading the grey hunters and the MoW leading the blood claws, while the wolf lord joins the skyclaws. Everything deep strikes but the scouts, who outflank.

I just need to see how long my friends will let use coke cans as drop pods...

Needs some work.

First thing, a Wolf Priest would be a much better choice to put with the Sky Claws. 5 WS3 models won't be as satisfactory as you'll want them to be. Giving them that re-roll is vital to their effectiveness. Even then, Skyclaws are not the most effective unit here.

You'll quickly find that those Wolf Scout Snipers aren't going to be as useful as you'd hope. 5 shots will still rarely cause the desired pinning effect successfully.

Id honestly recommend losing both of those and taking a Dreadnought in a pod.

The unit of Blood Claws is useless in this situation. The 1 additional attack they'll get over a Grey Hunter is negated by the fact that they'll end up getting charged, since the cant Drop Dop in and assault on the same turn. A unit of Grey Hunters would be far more effective, since they can have a turn of worthwhile shooting.

Which brings me to my next point. You should consider swapping those plasmaguns for meltaguns. The whole point of Drop Pods is to get close to the enemy. In this case, you should take advantage of that to blow up some vehicles.

OH GAWD, SO MUCH READING...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Okay, so after some retooling, and realizing i must have made some terrible mathematical error before, the revised list-

TOTAL- 1210

HQ- 183

Wolf Priest- 183
-Runic Armor
-Storm Bolter
-Saga of the Warrior Born

Elites- 342

Wolf Guard Pack- 112
-x 3
-Power Fist x 2
-Mark of the Wulfen
-Storm Bolter

Wolf Scouts Pack- 90
-x 5
-Sniper Rifle x 5

Dreadnought- 140
-Multi-melta
-Drop Pod- 35

Troops- 685

Grey Hunters- 240
-x 9
-Plasma Gun x 2
-Power Fist
-Wolf Standard
-Mark of the Wolfen
-Drop Pod

Grey Hunters- 230
-x 9
-Meltagun x 2
-Power Fist
-Wolf Standard
-Mark of the Wulfen
-Drop Pod

Grey Hunters- 215
-x 8
-Meltagun x 2
-Power Fist
-Wolf Standard
-Mark of the Wulfen
-Drop Pod

Wolf Guard Splits again, this time the Wolf Priest Jumps in a pod with the Grey Hunters, a Dreadnought materializes, scouts outflank, hijinx ensue.

I don't want to get rid of the scouts, I think they add some flavor (and I already assembled them...).

Ahh. Well then, by all means. Its not exactly like you're strapped for points, anyway, if you're really sitting at 1210.

You should be thinking about what point level you want this army to be at. In my personal experience, folks will have either a 1000 point or 1500 point list good to go, and will be less willing to fiddle with that to fit an uncommon point value, such as 1210. You could easily go up to 1500 with what youv'e got already. Exapand that Wolf Guard with up to 5 more Wolf Gaurd in Terminator armor, one with a cyclone, and put them in a drop pod. Alternatively, some MM/HF Land Speeders could work as well, and would still fit the list, since they can deep strike. Or you can scale down to 1000 points, but smaller games are no fun.

I'll probably retool the list around 1000, seeing as i'm not made of money.

As a side note, I noticed grey hunters have bolters and bolt pistols in their wargear. I know the pistols are there to be fired before a charge, but do they confer +1 attack in close combat as well?

Sort of. They do, but you have to have another close combat weapon as well. Grey Hunters do get another attack, since they have a pistol and a second close combat weapon.
