Obviously this is probably not allowed in tournaments...
But at a LGS would it be allowed to use a previous codex for your army?
There's some old rules I like a lot more than the new rules, and I'd like to use them again.
I'd probably have to get the consent of the player as well, but I'm just curious if you're technically allowed to do it.
Thanks!

Nope, if you try it the Legion of Codices will descend upon you and strike you down for the glory of the Imperium.
Of course you can play with any codex as long as you have the opponent's consent. Who's going to stop you?

Usually people are pretty reluctant to play vs. an old codex - but if you can find somebody who is into it, more power to ya!

If everyone is having fun, then why not? Old codices are generally less powerful than the newer ones for the same army, so no harm, no foul in my opinion. Well, I would say old books aren't always worse. Look at CSM and eldar (and I would argue orks, though many would disagree). Those books had much more viable options to take, with some real powerful units. Their current books have virtually no viable options, and generally have weak or over priced units. So the newer (4th ed, but still newer) books are stuck in mono build land, while the old books had more builds. Now if you are going with the most recent 5th ed books, all of those new books are better.

It is all contingent upon your opponents consent. If you are both OK it with, go for it. Obviously you should ask well before the match.
Just be aware that some of the older books might have rules that are incompatible with 5th Edition ( provided that you play with 5th ). Look through them, talk with your opponent and try come up with a mutually acceptable house rule. One example is the way how LOS works for the Deathworld Veterans in the old Codex Catachans.
