Okay so I was looking over the points cost for a SM vanguard squad and it says for 5 vets it is 125 pts = 25 pts per model just like sternguard. However you can add 5 additional vanguard for 20 points a model which makes no since because the first 5 are 25 pts a model. What did GW do? Did they clear this up somewhere whether the squad is 100 pts with 5 additional vets for 20 pts a model or is it 125 pts with 5 additional vets at 25 pts a model? Any feedback would be great. Thanks!

Basically, you are paying for the Sergeants Power weapon and options in those extra 25 points.

You buy the first 5 Vanguard vets for 125 (including a sarge with PW) and each additional vet costs 20 pts.

Still doesn't add up - 20*5 + 15 = 115, not 125.

The sarge's options don't cost anything. See the sternguard pricing.

There is only madness in trying to figure out GW's point scheme, beyond a few basic elements.

I mean, Space Wolves get free weapon upgrades at certain squad sizes. How is that supposed to be taken into account?!?

You pay extra for Heroic Intervention.

Almost ALL the squads are that way.

In most squads there is the extra cost of the veteran sarge. That's not the case in Stern or Van squads.

I get how the vanguard vets will be a more expensive points investment because they'll have more attacks base and heroic intervention but they should all be worth equal points just like the sternguard. It just doesn't really make sense to have 5 vets worth 35 pts (w/jumppack) and 5 worth 30.

Man GW should evaluate their codex's a little more.

No, in this case you are paying for the special rules the unit as a whole has in the first 5 models. The next 5 are the "actual" cost of the models.

Shouldn't the vanguard also have a base 3 attacks. The sternguard have base 2 and they have boltguns where as the vanguard have base 2 and they have bolt pistol and chainsword?

Is this rules confusion or just frustration over GW's inconsistent pricing model?
