Hey, just realized that the new IG codex says nothing about the officers being anything other than squad characters, thus they cannot be targeted in close combat, right? Wow, have I been playing that wrong. I'd just assumed they were IC who couldn't leave their squad (and assumed that bodyguards were for that), but in fact bodyguards just pick up wounds that would go to the officer during normal allocation. Pays to actually read your 'dex. Powerfist officers, here I come!

Interesting point - you can allocate two wounds to bodyguards, no matter how many there are. Meaning that a 6 person squad that took 8 wounds could give 4 of them to the bodyguard (the 2 they would normally get, plus the officers 2), giving the squad a vague chance of winning combat.

IIRC, if you added a medic those bodyguards could recover those wounds, making them even tougher.

...tanks from the 23rd and 48th batallion were flanked by tanks from the enemies' 56th batallion. It was then that General Smedfordshire revealed his secret weapon: a slightly larger tank.

1) Correct. Officers are not IC's in the 5th edition codex.

2) Correct. That's the whole point of bodyguards.

You've got it down. Some might be confused, though, in older IG editions they used to be IC's.

guardsmen, even the leaders, are apparently so mundane that they don't stick out in close combat. there's no picking them out (as stated above) since they're not independent characters.
