Relatively new in Fantasy, so....

If I add a character on a steed into a unit of Monstrous Infantry, do I lose the 3 wide monstrous infantry rule for ranks?

I would imagine not, as it is a property of the unit you are joining.

The way it was handled in 7th was you just treated the character as a normal member of the unit, unless they were larger in which case they "counted as" a number of models equal to those they displaced.

Now, the character on a steed would just sit outside the unit and wouldn't affect its ranks at all. Basically, if the character "fits right" into the unit, he doesn't affect them and they count as if they had the ranks they would if he wasn't there. If it doesn't "fit right" then he just sits along the edge, joining them, but otherwise not really affecting ranks, etc.

How it works (if I understand right):

20mm / 40mm bases sit inside 20mm unit, all other bases sit outside.

25mm, 25x50mm, 50mm, 50x100mm bases sit inside a 25mm unit, all other bases sit outside.

And so on, and so on. If it evenly fits, it's good. If off by even five millimeters (25mm in a 20mm unit), they park along the side.

Can the character join the monstrous infantry unit if on a steed? Wasn't there something about only monsters can join monstrous units, and characters on monstrous cavalry are able to as well?

He can join the unit, but he just tags along on the side and doesn't count towards ranks.
