Subject: Chaos Space Marine Question
|
 |
Hellacious Havoc
Lost somewhere in the Face of Terror.
|
OK - I'm starting a chaos space marine force (I have the codex and some wannabe Marines, Termies and a Dread, converted/defiled from the AoBR set), and I had a few questions that I was hoping some of the more experienced dakkaites could answer.....
1. What is the most commonly seen/overused Chaos legion/warband? I don't want to paint my forces anything too unoriginal... right now I am guessing that the Black legion is the spiky version of the Ultramarines...
2. Can any of the more Experienced Chaos players tell me what enemy races tend to be a problem? And what I should look out for?
3. Anyone that has faced Chaos Marines in the past, what units are a pain to go against? What do you automatically target as a priority as soon as it hits the board?
Any and All replies are appreciated.
So, in conclusion, I want to know everything there is to know about chaos
P.S. Hello Dakka! First Thread!

Always good to see another Chaos Space Marines player.
1. While Black Legionaires are the most common, they aren't on the level of Ultrasmurfs, so if you wanted to field one, while you wouldn't be original, you wouldn't get as much flak as Ultrasmurfs get.
2. The race I have the most problem with is IG, though I am told I try to fight too much of a battle of attrition and thats why I always lose against them.
I'll leave #3 for people who have played against Chaos, as that isn't me
anything else you need?

as for #3, obliterators, demon princes, plague marines. those are my big 3 hates, noise marines can be a pain too. (I run all the first 3 in my lists lol)

Plague Marines and bikers with the mark of nurgle tend to leave me with gritted teeth.

Hate to say it.....
But use one of the Space Marines Codex's for a "Counts As" Chaos warband. Sadly, the CSM codex isn't as nice as its loyalist counter parts and you can build a more fluffy/hard CSM army useing a SM codex.
Curse you GW!!!

The one thing I will say is to avoid doing the dual Slaanesh prince/Plague Marines/Obliterators combo that absolutely every tournament Chaos army has.
Death Guard armies are fairly common, which is armies made up of Nurgle marked units and Plague Marines. Iron Warriors come up here and there, and Khorne armies are about as popular as Nurgle. Slaanesh is probably the least seen Chaos army, since not everybody likes Noise Marines as much as Berserkers or Plague Marines. If you did Black Legion you could fluffily mix all four Chaos gods with ease though.

Defilers, obliterators, plauge marines, vindicators with possession, daemon princes.
Lords are pretty much trash, don't bother with them unless you're under 1000 points.
Good luck! I play my CSM as mainly black legion, but I use a unit of word bearers (regular CSM) just for fun.
Black legion gives you a great opportunity to use whatever stuff you want, and it's an easy paintjob!

There are no real 'overdone' forces, although cult marines often use the 'standard' style (ala eldar aspects). Black Legion, Iron Warriors and the 4 cult legions are the most seen IMO.
I think its a mistake to say BL is easy to paint - Black is a very hard colour to get looking good (ie shaded and highlighted properly)
HQ wise, DP's are probably the best, especily in pairs. Lords are only really worth it if your going to run a Raider.
Elites - Melta Chosen/Termicide for AT, larger units of Termies for CC
Troops - CSM, PM and 'zerkers are all good, in rhinos for best effect (or Raiders for 'zerkers)
FA - very little good choice. 3 man bikers/5 man raptors for anti-tank, larger raptor squads can do anti-GEQ (but zerkers/CSM can do it as well/better)
HS - Oblits and Delifers are both good. Havoks for 4x special weapon if you have enough troops. Raiders if you want zerker/termie spam.

yeah, havocs are awesome with 4 rocket launchers.
It's also hilarious to run them with 4 flamers and a rhino, because most people hear Havoc and think long range support

Wow... Didn't think I'd get this many responses in under half a day
But yeah, thanks to everyone who replied!
And if anyone was wondering, I was thinking of going Chaos Undivided. Probably the only cult troop choice I don't currently plan on including is Khorne berserkers, and even then... I may find a use for them (Expensive Cannon fodder for the Blood God!)
