So as the fluff states Magnus the Red cleansed the Thousand Sons legion of their mutations, thus saving them from damnation. However, after the heresy the mutations began again and Ahriman made the legion into dust.

My question is, how does the legion continue to exist without geneseed? All of the Thousand Sons at the time of the spell were turned to dust, or at least a large number of them, so when a warrior dies isnt he lost forever and does not pass his gene seed?

Hi, I would guess that the powers of chaos take old bodies and they become possessed by Thousand Sons. This is how it happens in the Space Wolf Omnibus'.

Gene seed is useless for most chaos legions. Too corrupted to be used.

The T-sons may call their "dusted" back into a new armor instead of having new recruts.

But do they really need masses of T-sons? Knowledge is what drives them, and maybe they don't like to share so they're happy
with only a few T-sons around?

It was actually Ahriman that cast the Rubric spell that led to the cleansing of mutation. But it had a nasty side effect, anyone who wasn't a psyker had their mortal remains turned to dust and their soul sealed into their power armor.

And when Magnus found out what Ahriman did, he was uber pissed and exiled Ahriman and his cronies that cast the spell.

This thread should answer your questions about what happens to rubrics after termination:

It's important to remember that the flesh change is a result of tzeentch's plan to control the sons. It's not a random gene-seed thing, like they try to explain in the book. So really, at Rubric stage, they're just empty shells, with what I'd like to think is some kind of gas inside them. I don't know.

Gas? I thought it was dust that was trapped in the armour. Where does it state that it's gas?

Actually I will disagree that Gene-seed is worthless to the traitor legions. As a matter of fact, the entire book Storm of Iron is based around the need for the Iron Warriors to capture more gene-seed to create more warriors. Even the Night Lordsbook talks about how they have not recruited in years so it would suggest that they need to implant some of their saved gene-seed in order to create more marines.

Now... when you are talking about the 1000 sons... I am stumped. There has to be some way that they are exposed to the Rubic after becoming 1000 sons.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

Sorry, I was first referring to post-heresy, when Magnus saved his legion from their mutations. And then when the mutations came about again it was indeed Ahriman who cast the rubric spell.

Originally, I kinda figured since they all were psykers they would simply pluck the Tson's soul from the warp and attach it to another piece of armor but then i figured it would be too hard to find a single soul in the Great Ocean. Seems I was right in the first place.

Also, how many psykers does the legion have? I know a great many of the legion werent psykers, but its curious to wonder how many of the legion still retained their flesh after the casting of the Rubric spell.

When a Rubric dies, either the armour is repaired (if it can be found) or a new set is built. Sorcerers then summon the soul of the dead warrior back from the warp and into the armour.
Also, there is no gas in the armour. Just a soul and dust.

The thing that I get hung up ont though is the fact that in "A Thousand Sons" ALL the T-sons seem to be psykers. . . Or are only the most powerful not turned to dust?

Since psychic powers in the 40k universe are governed almost entirely by willpower, and since almost all humans have some, even if almost non-existant level of pysker potential (as in, absolutely worthless), I would imagine that the immunity applies only to those who are of very strong will.

Not all of the Sons were psykers, although almost all had at least a little psychic ability. Only the most powerful of the Sons Psykers were able to survive the Rubric of Arihman without turning to dust.

Uncorrupted geneseed isn't worthless but I said thier own corrupted geneseed cannot be used.
The IW used not IW geneseed and the NL book had a former apothecary thinking of recrutement and he considered
a lot of his brethrens geneseed unusable. So they need a source outside their Legion/warp.

Funny how this may turn them all into smurfs...
