I was in a book exchange the other day and, quite by chance, stumbled across an issue of White Dwarf over a decade old. Number 256 I believe.
The pages were adorned with pictures of now-retired hobby heroes and *sigh* Jervis Johnson. Also included were pictures of the current Ork Boyz (I couldn't believe they havn't changed!), the recently updated metal Killa Kanz and 'Ork Dreadnaughts', an entire BFG battle report and a Dark Eldar army list!
Most interestingly however, was the magazine contained the old rules for Doom Rider, which would still work under current rules, to make sure, I even Proxied him and it all checks out.
So, the point is, could you use these rules and our favourite bike-riding Daemon Prince in unofficial games etc?

Anything you agree upon with your opponent is fine. Heck, I know some tourneys that would only mind if your opponent brought it up.

The Orks shown back then aren't the exact ones we have now - they recut the sprue with a bunch of new options and a few more variant parts for the Boyz themselves, but it's about 80% the same. Just being pedantic though!

3rd edition rules are still in use today (just look at the Dark Eldar or Daemonhunters) so anything from the time should check out, albeit with a few differences. Some things rely on rules that don't exist anymore for instance. Doomrider would still be usable, and I don't think anybody would complain if you used him. If I recall he's kind of terrible.

Or you could use the model and use the rules for a Slaanesh Lord on a bike. Then again, that's only if you really love the model.
