I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.
i'm encouraging everyone I see who uses these forums to harass everyone based on their names. For example, if I see someone post with a jewish sounding name, i'll make fun of them for being jewish. If I see an arab sounding name, i'll call them a terrorist. If they are a woman, i'll make sexist comments. If EVERYONE does this, and a great many people will, because old trolling habits die hard, they will switch back because of so many complaints.
After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.
The funny thing is, with facebook being linked to emails, it would be pretty trivial to tie a dakka account to a facebook account for about 85% of our users.
Personally I think it is a very bad idea though. The whole point of anonymity is to prevent psychos from tracking you down. If the cost is more moderation effort, for the sake of user's safety, so be it.

You mean- say goodbye to the many male players that play only female characters.
Theres gonna be alot of "OMG! WTF!! I cybered with her...that GUY in the Barrens...omg....I cant believe Icanhasboobs is a guy....Wait! Thats Fat Bob from the comic shop! Im gonna kick his ass!"
I dont see this as a bad thing- as long as adequate accountability goes along with it. I find it alot less likely someone would make threats of murder/rape/genocide if their name is connected to them.
Solves some other game related problems too- if this is connected to your game account- its going to stuff framing and spamming firmly into the trash bin.
It would make more sense to attach a User ID to all this, keep the personal info on the server side but still give a simple & solid way to keep track of abusive users.
Its not like theres only one WoW forum out there. If Blizz fumbles with this go post somewhere else til they fix it.
Pretty horrible move by an otherwise great company in Blizzard. Trolling is a problem but this seems to only create more of them. Its understandable that Blizzard is trying to deter trolling since they employ a staff of forum moderators and get bombarded by millions of accounts. However revealing one's identity seems to open up too many negative scenarios involving this guy:
In this world of identity theft, pedobears, etc...this doesn't seem like a good idea.
Instead, why not just ban or temp-ban people's accounts for trolling? However that too can cause problems since trolling-customers will be dissatisfied and can cop-out by saying "My account was haxored!" though...
Not sure whats going on with Blizz. They make great games but the people outside of the gaming projects like those responsible for this calamity in addition to Starcraft 2 Battle.Net not having CHATROOMS seems to be boneheaded mistakes.

Who actually posts on the official forums apart from morons and pre-teens anyway?
Someone enlighten me if I'm mistaken, because I've heard it's as bad as the Bungie forums.
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
I kinda think the anonymity is part of what makes the internet what it is. People go on the internet as a way to escape from all the social rules and regulations in real life. It acts as a safe blow off valve for a lot of stress......
I do acknowledge that the accountability thing is the good side of this, and just goes to show no issue is completely right or wrong. But....I think that letting the mods and admins have access to a users real name would be enough for accountability purposes.

It's not like if I know your real name I can't find you on facebook and every other social networking site, right?
Oh, wait, I can only harrass you on Blizzard's forums. Silly me.
Tbh I'm more concerned to where this leads. Will we be required to have our names tagged along side our character names in game in 6months.
The other issue is actual women playing the game are at a higher risk of in game aggrivation. My wife plays and has said this change would mean she'd never go near the forums ever again. If it went in game she'd quit.
Just a poor call by Blizz, and I feel sorry for the Blizz employee who posted his own name to prove it wasn;t an issue and within minutes had his full details posted in the thread.
Regardless, watching this crapstorm with interest, oh and full props to Treadstone of the US forums for this.
'Yo, this is the story all about how
My Real ID made some $%@* go down
I'd like to take a moment
Just listen to me
And I'll tell you all about how Blizzard took my privacy
In West Elwynn Forest, born and raised
Adventuring is how I spent most of my days
Questing, grouping, crafting my gear
Grinding Ashen Verdict up to Revered
When a guy named Bobby Kotick
Who was up to no good
Did something that not a single person understood
He showed up on the forums, told us we'd use our real names
And said "Now everyone who googles you will know you play our game."
I whistled for a blue and when he came near
He said they'd been planning Real ID for over a year
I said I didn't think getting tracked down would be funny
But he said "NAW FORGET IT, YO HOLMES IT'S MORE MONEY"
I went to account management and canceled my pay
And I yelled to Bobby Kotick, "Yo holmes, smell ya later,"
I looked back at Azeroth, devoid of security
And thought 'Goodbye, WoW
I think I'll keep my obscurity.'

The World of Warcraft are some of the worst forums you'll find, nearly every post devolves into a flame war. If it works out for blizzard, thats great, if not they can always undo it.

I love wow, i play daily. I dont see what the big deal is, but being a confident 30 year old man, it might have flown over my head. I suppose it might be an issue for kids or something, but not only do i not give a flying feth who knows my name, i will give any of the horde filth my address and if they wish to take it outside of warsong gulch i shall kick them round Middlesbrough as well. For the alliance! :-)
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
actually, i'm curious about the legality of this in regards to minors. Most parents don't really question what their children play online... they just kinda buy games / pay subscriptions for them. Now, if their doing this, and one day they realize their childrens names are being plastered on the internet, well, isn't that a lawsuit waiting to happen?

Aye, someone on the US forums raised something about US armed forces as well.
Something about not having you name publically online while active, not sure if thats true or not, but if it was I could see it being a big issue.

Most of my friends in the military have facebooks and such that they update from base, so I don't think its an issue.

It should be mandatory for all who play MMO's to wear small star devices on their left breast pocket and carry ID papers for ease of identification.

Though this is a bad idea...
Facebook gives you an expectation of privacy, as you can block people you don't know from viewing all of your status updates, etc.
Blizzard's idea was going to let anyone who used the Blizzard forums see who you were.

I dislike the move in concept because I prefer gender and race anonymity online, as do most people. That said the WoW forums are basically trolltown USA and anything that hurts them in some way makes me happy. I'm not surprised blizzard backed down, this move would have hurt their financials however slightly.
----------------
Do you remember that time that thing happened?
This is a bad thread and you should all feel bad
I would have had many a nights fun if blizzard actually implemented this.
This certainly didn't do much for there image to the public however, it basically sends a message of "Yeah, we're a dumbass, we know....oh, buy our game"
