So today my buddy and occasional poster thel1st and I got a game in - a little over 1500 points aside, my IG vs. his Tyranids.

IG:
HQ:
- Straken with company command, vox, company standard and melta

TROOPS:
- 30 man blob with 2 flamers, one plasma gun, vox, and power weapon commissar
- Platoon command with 3 flamers, power weapon, and vox
- Autocannon squad

- Vets with 3 plasma guns, vox, and Sergeant Harker

ELITES:
- 10 Stormtroopers with 2 plasma guns, plasma pistol

FAST ATTACK:
- 3 scout sentinels with multilasers
- 3 armored sentinels with plasma cannons
- Hellhound

HEAVY SUPPORT:
- Leman Russ Demolisher with heavy bolter sponsons

TYRANIDS:
HQ:
- Tyranid Prime with lashwhip and bonesword

TROOPS:
- 16 Termagants with fleshborers
- 5 Warriors with devourers, lashwhips and boneswords
- 8 Genestealers

ELITES:
- 1 Zoanthrope (using a venomthrope as a proxy)
- 2 Hive Guard

FAST ATTACK:
- 3 Raveners

HEAVY SUPPORT:
- Carnifex with twin devourers, bio plasma
- Trygon Prime
- Tyrannofex

I rolled off and got deployment; I deployed in a heavy flank in the middle, to minimize the effect of his Genestealers when they outflanked. Scout sentinels, Stormtroopers, and Harker's vets are in reserve.

In fear of my big guns, he hides everything he's got. His Genestealers and Trygon are in reserve.

Off to first turn!
TURN 1
My force moves up, peppering some heavy bolter fire at Warriors and the like, causing no damage.

However, my plasma cannons blow away 8 of the bunched up Gaunts, and my autocannons knock two wounds off the Tyrannofex due to some lucky (and not so lucky) rolling:

And the view at the end of my turn:

The Tyranids mount their assault, bravely rushing out the big monstrous creatures right in front:

The Gaunts shoot my Guardsmen, but they make all their cover saves. The Tyrannofex gets a glancing hit on the Leman Russ, merely stunning it and preventing it from shooting that turn. An uneventful move for the Nids.

TURN 2:
Right on cue, all the Guard reserves come in at once! The scout sentinels and Harker's vets come in on the left side of the field, while the Stormtroopers deep strike right next to the Guard's front line.

Straken gives orders to his Stormtroopers to Bring it Down! against the Carnifex, and orders the blob to do the same against the Tyrannofex. Platoon command tells their blob to First Rank Fire! Second Rank Fire! ensuring that there would be close to 70 shots coming out of the unit. The Hellhound leveled it's aim at the Gaunts, and the shooting phase was underway!
Here are the results:

The Stormtroopers took down the Carnifex with their hellguns alone, not needing any plasma. The Guard suffer their first casualty of the game as the plasma gunner from the infantry platoon overheats, while still getting a wound in on the Tyrannofex. Out of the 12 lasgun wounds on the big bug, 3 go unsaved, killing it. Autocannons and plasma cannons level on the Raveners, obliterating all but one of them. The sentinels and Harker's vets run towards the middle of the field.

After an especially harrowing shooting phase, it's time for the Tyranids to do their best to strike back!
Neither the Genestealers nor the Trygon show up. The Warriors break cover and rush towards the mob of Guardsmen in the ruins, while the Hive Guard and Zoanthrope manage to drop two of the armored sentinels:

After shooting and assaulting, the Warriors manage to rip the platoon to pieces, leaving about 10 men. The Guard fought back hard though, and killed one Warrior while badly wounding another!

TURN 3:
There was a big problem in the middle of the field, with the Warriors tearing Guard down left and right. I think Colonel Straken and his boys should do something about this!
Straken's command squad, the platoon command squad, and the Stormtroopers all rush in to support their dying comrades. After a brutal charge, all that is left is the prime. However, the Guard lost the melee by one wound. Straken made a no retreat wound armor save, and the platoon command held. The Stormtroopers, on the other hand, broke and ran. "Death or Glory" my ass.

Not one to be left out of the action, the remaining armored sentinel charged the Zoanthrope - after all, it wasn't going to last another turn of shooting from it and the Hive Guard. But it's okay, noone got hurt:

Time for the bugs to do their job! The Genestealers showed up, skulking behind Harker and his veterans.

The Trygon Prime burst out of the ground next to the scount sentinels, blowing one multilaser off and nothing else:

The Tyranid Prime struck down three of Straken's squadmates, but he and the platoon commander were able to lay the bug flat. They consolidated away, as seen in this blurry photo:

Not pictured: The Hive Guard killed three of my Stormtroopers with their big bug guns.

TURN 4:
Well these new Genestealers could be a problem, as could the big Trygon who just popped up! Good thing that Gunnery Sergeant Harker and his boys have a knack for killing big bugs! Their plasma and lasfire rip the big worm to pieces while the Hellhound torches the Genestealers:

The Stormtroopers regroup, and move their tiny regroup move towards the Hive Guard, along with Straken and platoon command. Everybody shoots, but only one wound gets through.

Surprising everyone, the Hive Guard shoot platoon command and assault! Nobody gets hurt on either side.

TURN 5:
Surprising noone, Straken and his flag-waving buddy charge the Hive Guard, killing them both. The Zoanthrope finally takes a wound from the unwittingly close-combat sentinel.

TURN 6:
The Stormtroopers, Straken, and the platoon command all charge the Zoanthrope, purging the brainbug with their fists.

All in all this was a pretty one-sided game. The Tyranids had a lot of chances where they could have turned the tides, but Guard shooting was just too good! Hopefully thel1st and I will get another game in the next few weeks and I'll post a report of them too. All credit goes to him for the photos - hope you guys liked reading this!

Nice battle report, and well played! However, I can't help feeling sorry for the Tyranid player.. damned Robin Cruddace.. it was never going to be fair pitching his best and worst against each other. Ah well, maybe the nids will do better next time.

You can't use more than one order at any unit. So your BiD + FrF on the blob was a no-no.

Nice to see two fully painted armies duke it out, good report

Hey, I know those armies! Looks like a fun game (maybe not for thel1st). Wish i could of joined you guys, hope to get a chance soon.

Having seen it in person as well, I love Brother SRMs IG army. Painting and composition are first class IMHO. Fun and challenging army to play against for sure.

So, idk if the tyranid player will ever see this but ima just give him some pointers for his list lolz

Oh and I have a question:

Did the genestealers come out in the terrain or did they outflank into it? Were they ymargl? If they were, why didnt they assualt because they can on the turn they come in?

So, first I personally don't see the use of single fexes anymore. They are pretty decent in pairs, but thats a lot of points. If you can only take one then I wouldnt take them. But if he really wants to use one, I would recommend for him to choose between a dakka-fex (2 tl devourers) or a screamer killer (bio plasma with 2 scything talons). This will save him points.

Secondly, having lashwhip/bonesword warriors that are footslogging is a huge drain on points and really isnt all that effective. I would have just used them with deathspitters and had the prime with his lashwhip/boneswords. That would have saved a bunch of points to use elsewhere too.

I have been doing some testing with raveners and overall I find that they are underwhelming if you compare them to a group of hormaguants. Use toxin sac hormaguants and they will deal quite a bit more damage. Use the extra points from downgrading your carnifex and warriors to make that brood 20ish and it will go crazy on any non-tank it sees

I have to admit though, I feel really bad for the tyranid player. He really just didn't have any sufficient ability to tie up units or take out units before all of the imperial guard's units could cause a massive amount of damage with massed firepower.

He just had too slow of units.

... and win.

Just shows what a little luck and a LOT of guardsman all in one place are capable of.

I'm kind of surprised that your blob squad broke and ran, given that it had a commissar in it.

Also, what mission were you playing?

I don't think the blob squad ran - that was the Stormtroopers. I think the blob just died the good old fashioned way!

The mission was killpoints, pitched battle.

A bunch of flamers, plasma, no melta, and not a single str 8 gun on the guard side? Ouch. Nids can work because people pack meltas and single shot str 8-9 weapons to take down vehicles, which aren't optimal against then. You have an IG list clearly tailored to play against a Tyranid player and it's a big mis-match.

I'm just using what I have. There's no devious tailoring of any sort going on here.

Nice game. I love love love seeing non mech guard on the table. Make the game feel like how it does in the fluff.

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.
