Hello! I'm trying to build a nice Space Marine list for my buddy who is getting back into the hobby after a 5 or 6 year absence. He played Deathwing back in third edition and wants to run multiple Land Raiders in fifth... Here's a list I came up with based on models available:

HQ:
Chaplain; terminator armor, storm bolter– 130

ELITES:
5 Assault Terminators; 5 thunder hammer / storm shield – 200
Land Raider Crusader; multi-melta, extra armour – 275
Dreadnought; twin-lascannon, missile launcher – 145
Dreadnought; assault cannon, heavy flamer - 125

TROOPS:
10 Tactical; missile launcher, plasma gun – 180
10 Tactical; missile launcher, plasma gun – 180
Rhino; extra armour - 50
10 Tactical; missile launcher, plasma gun – 180
Rhino; extra armour - 50

FAST ATTACK:
Land Speeder; multi-melta, assault cannon – 100
Land Speeder; multi-melta, assault cannon – 100

HEAVY SUPPORT:
Land Raider; multi-melta, extra armor - 275

1,990

I haven't played Marines before, so I'm not sure on tactics exactly, but here it goes:

*Will probably combat squad the marines in the Land Raider, so the ML & PG can shoot. Hold them back to capture objectives on my side of the table... Capture enemy objectives with Rhinos + Tacticals.

*Land Speeders deepstrike in, providing an extra tool for contesting

*Dreadnoughts support tactical squads.

*Assault terminators strike the heart of the enemy and give the opposition something to deal with.

**I can make this a Tri-Raider list by dropping a Land Speeder, Dread (AC/HF) & Rhino. Does that take away needed versatility or is it viable (friend would prefer 3 raiders)?

Would like advise on tactics, weapon loadouts, and any upgrades / changes I should make... I feel like I should include a named character for an extra punch, but not sure if it's necessary or not.

Thanks much!

basic marines in a land raider is like school in summer.

NO CLASS!

seriously though, its not a good idea. Don't do it. drop the raider, buy your marines a rhino, take more land speeders.

drop the missile launcher off your dread... CCW arms are important for insta-killing warbosses / thunderwolves in hand to hand.

assault cannon / multimelta speeders are not a favorite of mine... keep them to just multimeltas, or 2x multimeltas if your feeling sassy, or typhoon variants.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Extra armor on rhinos probably isnt needed. If you're going to combat squad them, consider razorbacks.

Could up the cannons on speeders to heavy flamers. use one speeder to pop the transport, and the other to torch the inhabitants.

you need something meatier to put into the heavy support slot land raider.

If I had the models I would... as it is I'm considering converting the Rhino's to Razorbacks

What would be the suggestion here? I do have more Terminators that I could convert to Assault Terminators...

I'll C&C this with the purpose of 'for fun' ... your bud is in a similar situation to where I started 40k. Lotsa termies, little else. Thing is, the 3rd codex DW was far better than what can be dished up now (one less AC per squad and considerably nerfed Rending).

*If* your bud has a power armored chap, run that one instead. My T-Chap has been parked since the latest 'dex.

No melatgun models? PFist sgt. models?

The HF makes more sense than the AC for anti-I, simply as it'll gain more hits and wounds, with the same great AP.

I would dismiss the DS idea. Bad Reserve roles will keep that valuable MM off the table, when it is likely to be used Turn 1.

If it's a godhammer, then I would not bother. Not enough firepower for what you'd lose. An LRC or LRR ... and high tolerance to shouts of "Raider SPAM!" then okay.

Libbies and meltas. With new codexes for SW, 'nids and BA, psychic hoods are much needed. A stripped down lib is okay. Meltaguns for the "pop a transport and assault the contents" game mechanic in 5e. Plasmaguns, not so much because you can't assault after firing them. And there are a lot more transports in 5e; remind your buddy of this.

If you replace the godhammer, talking your buddy out of more than one LR, then go with Sternguard (8 to 10, maybe 3 combi meltas) or 8 to 10 Jumper marines. SG are probably a more forgiving unit to learn on (getting *back* into 40k, anyway) with their ammo options, and more favored than Jumpers.
