I just bought mine today, since I have no way of painting eldar tanks without it. I've already found how fast you run through propellant. But that's not my problem. I'm trying to basecoat a tank in Iyanden Darksun (Right onto the plastic, since I thought there'd be no point in Painting it black, Dark yellow is dark).

I'm having nooo luck. The paint slides right of the tank. Is is stupid to use the gun to basecoat in light colors, or is my paint just not thick enough? Should I continue to spray it and just hope that it sticks?

Youre going to have to use a primer my friend.

Prime it white Samus
then spray on the yellow.

As mentioned the function of primer is that it adheres to shiny slippery stuff like metal and plastic a lot better than normal paint. Prime = first

Especially if you are spraying since the paint has to be thinned right down to get propelled out of the nozzle.
There won't be any adhesion, even paint applied straight from the pot with a brush can be risky on unprimed plastic.

The other thing is make sure you wash the tank before priming. There may be residue from the mould release agent, as well as oils from yer grubby mitts
I try to remember to wear latex gloves if I have to handle the plastic after washing it.

Yellows tend to be transparent pigments, so won't cover black very well. Hence the suggestion of white primer.
It will make the job a lot easier.

Just put it down to experience mate, you'll get there

good luck with the new airbrush

From what youve said, it appears you think priming and base coating are the same thing?

Priming is what you do to make it so you can actually put paint on that tank, primer isnt like regular paint.

You basecoat after you prime, and the spraygun is for base coating.

I got it to work....Sort of. I ended up just painting on iyanden darksun. F** the spray gun, I just used a huge brush.

I tried spraying my black hive tyrant (yes, already primed) with bleached bone...Disaster. Have to do a basecoat or something else first.

Seriously, I'm just gonna toss this thing in the trash. Propellant is too damn expensive, and it wastes too much paint. Waste of 40 bucks, seriously.

Best advice. Wish I would've figured that out before wasting my money.

If its not paint don't ever buy hobby supplies from GW. They're over priced and bad quality compared to dedicated art suppliers.

Look around at a craft store, sometimes they have an air compressor adapter for airbrushes. Of course, you can always get a compressor for the airbrush... mileage...

So I understand...I like their brushes too, but I could part with them in a heartbeat.

Yeah, it's a fine spraygun, the propellant is what kicks my butt. I'm already 1/4th done with the can, and I've only done like half of the tank. A compressor would be nice....How much are the very minimum ones? I don't need something fancy. As long as it has an on switch,it's fine.

*cough* ignorant poster says what? *cough*

They're expensive yes, low quality? Nuh uh.

I would look for some articles on spray guns, probably a few.

I might agree, but I see his point. Certain things can be bought for much cheaper. I personally like all of GW's products (their hobby knife has an excellent grip, as does their pin vice) and the Spray gun is no exception. It works great, I just hate using a can of propellant.

I'll look for some tutorials on it.

I got a fairly basic compressor for about $100 a couple of years ago, but there may be some cheaper ones out there if you look.

Just for the record, there are some primers out there designed to be shot from an airbrush, but from what I've heard it is just as easy to get the primer in a shaker can and apply it that way. Biggest thing I find with an air brush is that it requires a bit of maintenance to keep clean and functioning correctly, not to mention that mixing up the paint correctly can be a bit fiddly.

Vallejos polyurethane primer works wonders.
You quickly learn how to maintain your airbrush and how to do it quick. The biggest "problem" is thinning paints, but it's not much different – or harder – than thinning paint for brushing. After a while you'll see if you have the right viscosity. (Or you'll buy paints made for airbrushing )

Ah, that would help a lot. Does vallejo sell at any craft stores? I've never seen it at any hobby stores (recently, at least)

I can't order off of any websites (I'm underage and my mom insists that everything I buy online will ruin her spotless credit >.&gt, otherwise I would have bought their white and reds, among other things.

Oh man, your mom sounds like my dad. Im not kidding we would goto his house and Id go onto youtube to show him a video, and INSTANTLY he would freak out about getting viruses and stuff from down loading things.

If you want to learn anything about airbrushing, PM MistressofMinis. That chick knows her shtuff on airbrushing. Infact I think she even commented once about how to convert a GW flamer spray gun into a air compressor style. Anywho, she is the Yoda on this subject.

Vallejo sells at hobby stores. If your local hobby store carries Vallejo they can order their primers for you.

If you want to learn more about airbrushing, look up the thread started by Mistress of Minis. Tons of great information in it.
