oh crap, where am I?

What originally attracted you to this hobby, and what keeps you going at it?

For me it was when i picked up a white dwarf magazine in Europe and flipped through it. I personally continue painting because i like the looks of them and i bought a few to many to start out with.

The overall feel of the lore.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Wight Dwarf?

this could be the new WHFB race we are all speculating about! Undead Dwarves! It needs to be done!

For me it is an extension of modelling and making up for the wargamming that I wanted but never really got as a kid, so maybe it is a result of a mid-life crisis!

Gundam, I was 12 and liked giant robots, hence I play Tau, forgive me.

As I side note I no longer watch anime and am much more involved in the overall fluff.

Huge point for me aswell

Mostly however, i enjoy games of strategy with smart opponents. I played chess to death in highschool, and revived it and killed it again when i joined the navy. Saw a buddy painting his black templars and long story short i was hooked for life

Gives me an artistic outlet too, its nice to be able to relax and paint when i have down time in the Fleet

This, and spikes are my favorite things.

Actually, it was my brother. He stumbled upon a White Dwarf, thinking about it I'm kinda disapointed he didn't find a Wight Dwarf, and he got us all into it when I was about 10 and he was 14. I just followed along with it and just kinda grew up with it.

There was something appealing about throwing handfuls of dice while screaming "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!".

Seriously though, painting and gaming is what got me into it. I was at my FLGS and saw some guys wicked lightning bolt paint job on his night lords, then watched him eat up some Dark Eldar. Started buying my World Eaters the next week. But now I'm a fluff nazi. Its come full circle...

I used to play as a kid. I started playing the DoW games recently, and me and a friend got talking, now me and a few other mates have started various armies. I love the fluff, the painting (i find it relaxing) and the tactical gameplay makes you think.
Im a poor student, so the price is an issue but I think, buying a unit or two a month, i could have 1500-2000 points by the end of the year.

Forgot that aspect

Will never be able to be Fluffwise like you guys, but if the narrative element wasn't supporting the gameplay am not sure the interest would be as strong for me.
Have always loved mythology and see correlations between the two.

The aesthetics is important too, but possibly the best thing is the gaming and making with my daughter when she visits. Or is that just an excuse for my own self indulgence

I've been into miniatures wargaming since I was a little kid - my dad introduced it to me when I was 6 or so. As for Warhammer in particular, I just really liked the look of the minis. I was really into painting big dudes in power armor when I was younger, and Space Marines were cooler than the Kryomek SWAT marines. After painting a few loose minis, I got the 3rd ed starter set for 10 bucks at a flea market, and dove into the rule book. I was sold from the pictures and fluff.

What led me to discover the background was Dawn of War (I originally typed in 40k without thinking HERP A DERP). The overall feel of the lore, combined with my love for doing stupid artistic things, led me to finally suck it up and start throwing my money at GW.

I read a copy Dragon magazine and was originally interested in Battletech. I took a trip to my (not so local then) flg stepped inside and had a browse.

I was immediately attracted to the covers of Rogue Trader, The Lost and The Damned. Looking inside of them I enjoyed the crazy rules, the even crazier background and having one look at the range of minis made me stump up my saved pocket money there and then.

Funnily enough Battletech is one of the few 'mainstream' games that I have never played...go figure!

much like Wyvern here, I find the painting relaxing. and love the tactics. And yes, a unit or two a month, will allow you not only to have the size army you want in a year, but you'll most likley have them painted, something not everyone that buys alot at one time can say.

i'm in it for the women.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Well, back in 98 or so, a buddy of mine tried to get me into it. I knew of the expense of 40k, so was turned off, and didn't want to play because of that. A couple years later, a few more of my friends started playing. One already had multiple armies, another friend had Tyranids, one more played Chaos Khorne. I already had some guard minis that I bought for other games, so I just started using them. My buddy that originally tried to get me into it gave me maybe 20 more guard minis. Since then, I've had 2 guard armies, 2 chaos armies, a Lost and the Damned, Sisters, Grey Knights, Space Marines, and Dark Eldar. I've since also gotten rid of some of those unfortunately.

Lately what keeps me involved is the hobby aspect. I've been converting alot of my wife's Orks. I've not played a game of 40k outside my house in years now. I miss those days.

This was my plan. I hate having upainted miniatures. So this way my whole army will always be painted.

I have been big into computer wargaming for years, and even made my own version of Axis and Allies that used my collection of military micro machines as playing pieces back in high school. However, It wasn't until a few years ago that I got into the GW hobby, thanks to a friend of mine who convinced me to split a couple of BFG box sets. I finally started 40k because I liked the universe enough and wanted a game that I could find opponents for more easily!

For me it started when I was young, I saw some warhammer boxes in the toy store and told my mum I wanted some. However my mum thought it was too complicated for me back then, but mainly it was too expensive.
But instead we bought our own metal miniature molds and we had lot of fun with it. Some Christmas I got a box of Orc Warriors from my mum and that's pretty much when I started with warhammer, but for a couple of years I only collected WHFB models as I was in to fantasy. But at one point my interest just vanished, leaving a half unpainted ogre kingdoms battalion behind. The reason was that I got kind of addicted to World of Warcraft, which I was for 4 years where I didn't do much else then playing wow.

But one day, when I had gotten completely bored with wow, I stumbled upon some warhammer on the net, or something I ended up on GW's site and thought "hmm, maybe I should start with Warhammer again" while reviving fond memories of the past. But this time around I was more in to Sci-fi because of Mass Effect and while browsing the different 40k armies miniature ranges I noticed the TRYGON KIT! In an instant I was sold to tyranids and ordered one along with a kit of genestealers, and dug up my old, mis treated gaunts I had bought as one of my first kits. This was about 3 months ago.
It's the painting and collecting part that I'm in to the hobby for, and also the looks and feel of the 40k miniatures.

I've always wanted to play warhammer, but I've never gotten in to it as all my friends have been very uninterested and my brother who also collected armies didn't want to play either, because it was too nerdy.
Another problem is that I live so far away from the nearest warhammer shop, I could get to it quite easily but there isn't many warhammer games happening and those that come there usually plays with their friends.

I got into it about 6 years ago when a friend brought in a very basic Space Marine. I was instantly attracted to the hobby and bought my first kit the next day: A combat squad of 5 Marines for £5. (This was in the glorious days where you could get a box of 5 "proper Marines" (not the snap-together ones) for £5!"

I kept seeing these interesting looking models but had no idea what they were. Then I went to a GW, the one in the Metro Centre, got a Demo for both 40k and Fantasy and convinced my friends to go halfs on the starter set for Fantasy.

Yeah I know, but back then you could get them for £5! £5!! Now it costs £6 for 3 lame snap-fit Marines.

I'm attracted to the feel and aesthetics as well. Really, the gothic futuristic structures of the Imperium, the organic feel of the Eldars and even more of the Tyranids; the dark humour behind the Orks and such things is what makes me like WH40K... the game intself is incidental to me.
