I have returning to tau after a break of a year or so. Ive been reading on the tactics forums here about a Fireknife. What is that? Ive not seen mention of it the codex, and the weakness of my search foo is showing.

A Fireknife carries a Missile Pod and Plasma Rifle for its weapons. Usually with a Multi-tracker or Hard-wired Multi-tracker.

Adding a bit moar:

It is a generalist suit payload good for decent range and punching through light armor vehicles.

Even more:

The FK suits offer a decent ability that is 'standard' - as such, you'll see a lot of people saying "Take fireknives" when they have no clue why or when they should, simply because it's the 'thing to do'.

Crunch the numbers and do some reading and always make up your own mind on suit loadouts

If you haven't been playing for a while, some other common loadouts right now are the:
Deathrain - TL Missile Pod and Hardpoint of choice (Flamer?)
Firestorm - Burst Cannon, Missile Pod, Multitracker
Helios - Plasma Rifle, Fusion Blaster, Multitracker

Damn, I use the Fireknive and the Helios. I didn't even even know they had names to them!

Burning Eye – Twin-linked Plasma Rifles
Centurian - Plasma Rifle, CIB (IIRC?)
Firesurge - Missile Pod, Fusion Blaster
Stormsurge - Burst Cannon, Fusion Blaster
Sunfire - Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Fusion Blaster
Sunforge – Twin-linked Fusion Blasters
