IF YOU CAN'T MAKE FUN YOURSELF, SOME ONE ELSE WILL. WHY NOT BEAT THEM TO IT?

This lesson has never rung more true then this night.

Just listening to my brother and his wife, I realised it.
They have a near constant banter, making fun of each other or themselves, leaving me, my brother in law, and anyone else laughing their asses off.

Now you might be wondering why I decided to post this.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

You didn't make fun of yourself..

Also I disagree with your lesson.

True, I didn't. But I often times do, this night just taught me that it can actually be useful.

Marshal2Crusaders wrote:Self-esteem issues much?

Not quite. It takes a little something to be willing to make fun of yourself.

@GES

Do they know you drink?

-----------

If they didn't make fun of each other, you guys would, jokingly. People never make fun of others they don't know unless they deserve it, or they're scumbags.

People are people, they'll make fun of you if you do or not. They'll feel more comfortable if you make fun of yourself.

I disagree with that sentiment completely.

If I make fun of myself, it isn't going to stop other people doing it as well. It will likely encourage them to do so.

The trick is, that's a good thing. There are people I know who are too sensitive or too fragile to allow a joke to be made at their expense, and they're boring people.

Yeah, my bros and in laws know that I drink occasionally. Long as I don't puke on their rug or drive, they're cool.

I think that's what I was trying to get at, but couldn't think of how to phrase it.

Also, if someone makes fun of you like bullying, making fun of yourself takes the enjoyment out of it.

Ok.... so your assuming the verbal fetal position. By being so pathetic you join in on people making fun of you for being so pathetic.

I don't get the position you took on this...

@GES

I was really hoping you would take it more offensively than that... and as I type this, I realize I am literally trolling.

So I am out since I probably won't be able to restrain myself from some sort of insult or another... or a couple dozen.

Good luck with drinking though.

Gah, are the quotes fethed up for everyone else, every thread is like this, though this is where I noticed it... >.>

I wouldn't consider it assuming a verbal fetal position.

In my experiance, when I did this, it stopped. It wasn't fun for them, they didn't get the reaction they wanted, they stopped.
I won.

OR they realized you were so pathetic already that to continue to tease you wouldn't take you any lower, and thus robs it of any point. They could spend their time on teasing other people.

Also, these 'revelations' you have arn't anything new. Every kid in the world figures out pathetic ways to make people stop fething with them.

If you really wanted it to stop you'd change whatever it is that makes them dislike you.

I'll give you a 7. You've obviously had practice, but you're not quite ready for the big leauges yet.

As for making fun of yourself, like most things it is good with moderation. Every now and then will get a laugh out of others (albeit at your expense), and lightens up the attitude, takes the sting out of most insults. In a friendly environment I'd say it's perfect. Do it too much, or around the wrong people, and you just make yourself look like a right idiot. Either way, it's better than getting up in arms over the slightest insult or drop of a hat.

If the guys in questions are pricks, why would the person being teased care?

That doesn't make any sense. If you want someone to stop doing something, then you do something to make them stop doing it. It doesn't matter what you do, so long as they stop doing what you don't like.

You couldn't even maintain a reasonable level of internal consistency with respect to your attempts at being condescending. It was quite pathetic really.

Good point, GES why do you care if the guys in question tease you? Therein lies your answer to high school happiness. If you play your cards right you will turn being teased into a chick magnet and girls will think the douche bags fething with you are douche bags and that you are mature for taking it in stride.

Yeah, what did I say that didn't make any sense? If they tease you for being skinny and nerdy, hit the gym and learn some sports info. If they feth with you for being smart, stop letting people know your grades. If they feth with you for being fat, run it off. If they be hatin' on yo threads, buy some new threads. The list goes on.

If they are fething with you for race/religion/orientation forget them, they are intolerant and not really worth the effort.

Who's the most important person in your life?
YOU ARE
As long as you like yourself, feth the others.
Be true to yourself, if other people dont like it, it's their loss

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

+1 for that!

Many times i don't care if i'm an idiot, i just say what i want/need/have to say, even to my friends. After a while, they got used to it, and it's okay.

Could you be there

'cause I'm the one who waits for you

Or are you unforgiven too?

Cool, I wasn't really thinking of it in that sense but if that worked for you more credit to you.

My workmates regulary try to pull my leg and tell jokes at my expense. I find that laughing with them and jibing myself takes the wind right out their sails.

So I agree with the Lesson, its one I use myself a lot and aside from deflecting jibs and jokes, makes everyone realise you have a good sense of humour .. or in my case, perverse.

You stated that high school kids find all sorts of pathetic ways to stop people from messing with them, and then said that if you really wanted the abuse to stop that the person being bullied would take the criticism and improve. The implication is that there are other ways to stop people from screwing with you, and that they're just as effective as taking the criticism; meaning that, if you only care about the abuse, they're just as viable.

If you said that to someone's face, it would be quite mocking.

Still, self-deprecating humor is difficult to pull off though, as it can very easily move into an awkward "Is he serious?" sort of phase if used too often.
