No, the bases were used to represent Altitude and something else. and they were required just made it so their was less record keeping.

i never actually played it but I always wanted to. we never had a group for it. for all the stuff I read it is supposed to recreate intense dog fights well.

It plays really well with a smallish number of planes, I've not played with more than half a dozen or so planes each. The only problem I've run into is getting a big enough player base for it to remain interesting

Elephant Graveyard

I've seen it played it was pretty funny i think it was Eldar v. Tau and Eldar won due to the only save in that game but they only won by 1 kill since the Tau all left after they ran out of ammo or accidently shot of the edge of the board.
You chose cards with movements already on and use each card on a plane and then move it and shoot.
You have to plan reactionary and attacking so it can get pretty tactical.

Interesting, and I guess like BFG momentum is big component by which I mean you can't always control where your ship/plane is going and need to plan ahead 2 or three turns.
