Subject: 1st battle. Orks 612 ptz vs. ... CLOSE COMBAT IMPERIAL GUARDSMEN???!!!

Well I'm sorry this won't be a very detailed battle since it happened quite some time ago and I remember only a little bit out of of it... HECK I don't even have the enemy army list! (Thou I remember he had a chimera and at least two plattons with sergeants w/pw)
But there is a point why am I actually posting this so yeah... (which will be revealed in the end so you might actually bother to read it...)
So my little army I had "recently" (meaning at the time when the game happened it was recently)
HQ:
Wierdboy - 55 ptz
ELITE:
5 Tankbustas, 2 squigbombs, 1 tankhammer, Nob, 'eavy armour - 100 ptz
4 Nobz, Pk, 'eavy armour - 200 ptz
TROOPS:
11 Ard' boyz, Nob, Pk - 145 ptz
12 Boyz, Nob, Pk, 'eavy armour, - 112 ptz
TOTAL:
612 ptz.
Type: pitched battle
Mission: Capture and control
So my bro set up some terrain and I went 1st deploying all of my army kinda scattered in +5 cover. Pretty much the same for OG expect one little unlucky squad.
My weirdboy was in the same unit as my ard boyz and then came my moving phase. Wait... WAIT!!! What do you mean I can only move 6' inch!!! Waagh! Herecy... MUST GET VEHICLES!!! RED ONES FOR THE MATTER!
k. Unto the game. So I moved trying to be careful and staying in the cover. Now comes the shooting phase. Roll with the weirdboy... 2... K. Where did my codex go? ... So frazzle huh? Str 6, ap 3, blast, pinning... Damn... And wait! What's that over there in my line of sight with no cover save what so ever? A platoon with 10 imperial guardsmen! Great.
So I blast them and only 2 survive. So none of my orks can shoot... Well expect Tankbustas, because they automatically attempt to shoot the Chimera... but they miss cause it's out of range. Everyone else runs a bit further and thus concludes my 1st turn in wh40k.
So those 2 guys who were left alive simply fail the leadership test and run away like little children. Good for them - they won't die... For now at least.
My bros move.
The chimera moves a bit closer and unleashes the smoke... k dont remember the name, but you do get whats happening.
So my move yet again. YAY!
So I move a bit closer with tankbustas, nobz and boyz closing in on the chimera. My ard boyz get closer from the other side.
Shooting phase.
My tankbustas shoot and guess what... they miss... (kinda no suprise with BS 2... another question. Does it pays of to have gretchin in your army just cause of their BS 3?)
So then comes my nobz and hack and slash and the chimera is down! YAY! Double yay cause some IG just came out to get themselves killed later on! Excellent!
My bro's move
On the other part of the table a platoon of guardsmen come out from hiding, shoot my ard boyz like little cowards. COME HERE AND FIGHT! ... Oh wait they actually do that further on and they manage to kill three or five orks in total. Then I counterattack and... Well there are only 3 imperial guardsmen standing there now. GREAT!
And my poor little squad of boyz gets annihilated by those mean evil IG who just got out of the chimera and some IG behind them! I'll have my revenge!
My move
I annihilate the squad of IG who dared to attack my ard' boyz and kill a platoon with my nobz and tankbustas. I think this leaved him with only one platoon of IG and 1 sentinel if I remember correct (the sentinel was the two-legged mecha who had the scouts special rule... once again if remember correctly.)
Sadly at this point we were interupted by a damn beast known as GRANDMA. so we had to interupt and as my brother predicted how things would have happened.
He shoots. I come closer with nobz and hit the IG hard. Shoot with tank busta and throw some tankbusta bombs. Meaning total annihilation.
Sry I'm confused cause I remember a lot of details, but not the whole picture together.
Anyways this was my 1st game of wh40k and I enjoyed it.
So now to the point I mentioned earlier.
Is it possible to make a close combat IG army that actually works?!
Cause as I've learned from my second game with my bro the idea of IG is this:
"What you say sir?! WHAT YOU SAY?! I'm sorry, but I cant hear you! Probably cause my HS is killing your troops at this very moment"
K. Hope you enjoyed reading this thread of a wh40k noob.

well, there are some kick-ass IG close combat units (knife fighters Penal legion, or rough riders), but entire IG army built around close combat? I don't think so.

Rough Rider with Boomstick

Get Straken, Yarrick and penal legion. A platoon command with Flamers, a large blob of 30 guardsmen with PW and Commisars w/ PW. Add Ogryns and Rough Riders.
DISCLAIMER : I never said it would be effective did I?

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Well obiviously the Guardsmen you played against wasnet that good. U see Guardsmen I are really weak unit with low LD untill you combine them with commanding units. Lord Commissars, Commissars, Physkers, Preists, Sergents with power weapons, are the units that make ur units the best. They really own in close combat. My traitor guard army is basically ranged units but I always give them those combinations. I will never forget that time when a Nob squad with a WARBOSS Attacked my Veteran Squad that had a Lord Comissar. I lost the fight but I killed 3 Nobs and the rest of the squad was finnished with my infantrys backing them up. But the units that you need to look out for are the Ogryns and Penal Legion squads. if they are on the feild get your self the best units that you can get and not use slugga boyz beacuse they will be a waste. Also Sentinals are also effective in close combat. Use power claws against Sentinals (Very effective). Anywyas keep on playing!

What a shocker? One of their first games? and sentinels are not good in close combat, they're hard to kill with close combat, since orks are S4 usually, meaning they can only glance them.
Imperial guard can be good in CC, though even having one unit of guns can alter the game entirely. IG's strong suits are guns and bodies.
Well, glad you liked your first game of 40k... and die xenos scum.

My inner grammar nazi is killing me...
You won't hold them off for many turns, so long as I get this across.
A-lone, as you get more models, and more into 40k, give your squads of boyz power klaws.
