Bastion Studios will be hosting its first ever Ex-Illis open at Gen Con this year.
The open will feature a tournament and painting competition. First prize for each event is $1000 voucher for an online games retailer, second prize is $500.
Sign up to play or paint (maybe both)

I just wanted to say good luck and thanks for doing your best to expose the community to a new game. I'm still not sold on the hybrid nature of the gameplay, but I do enjoy the fluff. If I was going to GenCon I'd definitely stop by.

That's funny, I feel the opposite. I'm really interested in the hybrid gameplay but I'm a little put off by the fluff (not totally, I really like the dark historical fantasy angle, I just think some of the choices are a little predictable).
Would really love to try this game one day but none of the local group are interested and I need another miniatures game like I need, well... it probably wouldn't be prudent. Still, the miniatures are gorgeous.

Just heard about this game, and it certainly is unique. Between the great models, the feudal europe setting, and hybrid game play, my curiosity is certainly piqued. If anyone has more info on this, please do share.

I recently tried Ex illis for the first time at GenCon Indy and I can truly say that it's a very engaging and fun game. There are some unique concepts to it, and it has an extremely community-oriented group of people developing it. The President of Bastion (the company that created Ex illis) and most of its development team were on hand to do demos, answer whatever questions gamers had about Ex illis and take feedback as well. It was a really positive experience, and I'm planning on playing the game for the forseeable future.
On a side note, the software to play the game is free and can be used on a PC, MAC, iPod, iPad or iPhone. You don't need dice, measuring tape, or army books (all the info is on the Wiki for the game/in the army builder that is built in to the free software)... and the minis are fairly priced. $100 will buy you a starter box (54- mini army and gameplay mat) and another boxed set to supplement your new army. The game is economical for its scale and the quality of the minis.
If anyone has any specific questions about the game, I'd be more than willing to try and answer them.

@ neconillis - Thanks for the encouragement. The Bastion guys felt bad about how much heat I took on their behalf... so they hooked me up at GenCon
feel free to pop over to the forums and ask. There is a whole community of enthused gamers itching to answer your questions.

so.. were there enough folks to run a tourney and give out the 1000 buck prize?
I wish I had made it.. I wanted to see the models in person, but real life prevented me from bopping over to Indy...

Yeah we had about thirty people participate. First prize went to Mike Guyer. Second prize to a guy named Matt. I didn't catch his last name.
I got knocked out in the semi finals... Still sad about that, but we had a great time.
For those interested, I'm told bastion will create a battle report from the data in the software.
Hope you can make it next year.

Thanks for the invite =) As soon as things slow down a bit more in the real world I'll be sure to do that. BTW, who ended up winning the tournament at GenCon? Automatically Appended Next Post: Yup, I can't read, didn't see your last post. I await the battle report though. Hopefully it'll be worthwhile.

I asked the marketing guy about creating a battle report for you guys who wanted to check it out. He said he would look into getting it to me, but they are super busy so he couldn't make me any promises.
Its just as well, I dont want to re-live my last match anyway.... Made some DUMB choices that cost me a shot at the championship.
