I don't follow it, so I don't know most of the personalities except crossover ones like Ken Shamrock, but I've thought about getting in to watching it because of a heavyweight match I saw one night. It was a large Russian fighter against a slightly shorter guy of the same mass more or less. In the first few seconds of the match, the Russian fighter was hit right in the face. You could immediately see that his nose was broken. I figured that the fight was over, right there, but this Russian keeps fighting and knocks this guy cold about two minutes later, and *then* still gives an interview after the fight, thanking God and his wife for victory.

I can't imagine that level of determination and pain tolerance.

I didn't know Bruce Lee was considered MMA

I consider him MMA. Jeet Kune Do can be considered MMA, as it emphasizes using different tools for different situations. (Grappling, Punching, Kicking, Trapping)
The History Channel had a special on him two months or so ago, and one of the segments was about how he affected martial arts.
Several MMA people were interviewed, and they pretty much all credited Bruce Lee with being an informal founder of MMA.

When I first heard about the existence of Mixed Martial Arts I thought: AWESOME! Real-Life Street Fighter! Then I found out they had weight classes and it came down to a bunch of sweaty men in short pants grappling a lot and my interest in the concept died quickly.

I vote for Batman.

Weight classes weren't really introduced until UFC 12. If you want to see some brutal fights, look for the matches up to that point.

I don't want to see "brutal" fights, I want too see awesome fights, where a 1,6 meter tall Asian guy kung-fu kicks a Russian Wrestler.

Some fireballs would also be nice.

Jon Jones- the dude is seriously talented. I'd LOVE to see him and Vitor Belfort match up. I also have alot of respect for Lyoto Machida And Mauricio Rua.

And I gotta root for my Local guys from Arizona Combat Sports- Ryan Bader(anyone who plays the Imperial March when the come into the arena gets cool points), Aaron Simpson, Jamie Varner.

For those that dont know much about Bruce Lee- he was the epitome of a Mixed Martial Artist. His work was the pioneering sort that set aside traditional constraints of the 'classic' martial arts. His book, 'The Tao of Jeet Kun Do' was a foundation for many to learn from as they formed their own martial arts. In essence- he was the first to adopt what worked best- and set aside what didnt. Essentailly its his philosophy that lives on while the martial arts evolve.

And for those that are haters of the grappling game- thats ok- its easy to dislike something thats too technical and you dont understand what going on

To add to my list: Charlie Brenneman.
He teaches MMA classes at a gym that , with traffic, is 45 minutes away.

I'm gonna get enrolled ASAP.

Looks like Charlie is on the card for UFC 117, so hopefully he gts some good camera time and kicks some ass to get those bonuses. I also really hope Silva doent turn into a slowed clown again....or if he does that Sonnen plows him (I doubt it happens....but....)

I havent found too much cross over between the MMA world and the tabletop gaming world though.

I'll take some flack from this ( if anyone here is a UFC/Pride fan ) but here's my caves and my hates:

1. Tito. Grew up with him. Saw his fight against "Gay Metzger" and the subsequent feud with the Lions Dn. Almost crapper my pants when I saw him demolish Old Man Shamrock. Tito fan for life.

2. Frank Mir. First fight I ever saw with him was for th title. Mir vs Sylvia. Saw Frank break Sylvias arm, became an instant fan. Watched him beat Lesnar and Nog. Mir fan for life.

3. The Natural. Come on, do I really have to say why I like this man? 46 years old. Beat Tito, Liddell, Belfort, Sylvia, and Gonzaga. 3x HW Champ, 2x LHW Champ. The dudes a licing legend.

Fighters I hate.

1. Ken Shamrock. Where to begin? The tap out controversy against Royce Gracie? The "accidental cut during training" thing before the Kimbo fight? Acting like a punk in a 40 year old mans body? Roids? Always hated Ken. And Tito fixed that problem for me. Thanks Tito.

2. Lesnar. Is the man an animal? Yes. Does he have an iron chin? Yes. Is he an athlete seen once a generation? Yes. Is he an donkey-cave? Oh my yes. The actions after the Mir fight will always stick with me. Dudes gotta grow up. But holy god what a speciman.

3. Matt Hughes. Dude, no one wants you to read the bible to them during training. No one wants to hear about what a legend you are. Get your head out of your ass. Never liked him, never will. The man has little to no heart. Matt Hughes is the only reason I give boring, "scared to get hit" GSP any credit.

That is all.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I would fix the spelling errors, but I'm really not to interested right now. Donkey-cave was supposed to be a derogatory word for the anal cavity. Whatever.

Also, I left out Mayhem. I'm sorry Mayhem, you're also one of my faves.

I totally forgot to mention Roger Huerta, technically hes retired, but I figure he'll come back in a couple years after the film thing gets bring. Although he HAS to be a better actor than Rampage.....

Cung Le outta WEC has made an impressive post acting come back too.

Chris Lytle, puts on good fights too- and really shoud have had the SUbmission of the Night at the last UFC, Lesnars submission on Carwin was no where near as 'Wtf? How did he do that??' like Lytles was.

I used to train Jet Kune Do. My trainer was Stefan Nikander, who in turn was trained by the Jet Kune Do legend Ted Wong, and Ted Wong was trained by
Bruce Lee himself. So, technically, when it comes to martial arts I'm directly related to Bruce Lee.

I follow MMA casually, although UFC cards are usually too hit and miss for me to pony up for their PPV's. Still,I watch it on SPIKE,usually follow TUF,and watch some smaller promotions like WEC,Strikeforce, and NAAFS on cable, and sometimes me and some friends will get together and catch the UFC PPV's at a bar or chip in and get it at someone's house.

My favorites would probably be Rich Franklin,Stephan Bonnar, and Clay Guida, though. Hopefully,Rich can put together a title run now that he's moved up to LHW. Bonnar is by no means a top tier guy,but he's toughness is ridiculous and his fights are always entertaining. Guida's also a very entertaining fighter.

I can't wait till I can get my classes with him started. His brother was my wrestling coach for a year, and he taught my older brother wrestling for a year as well.

The only guy in MMA that I can honestly say I truly despise is Brock Lesnar. He's an egomaniacal,steroid-pumped,homophobe,and I can't stand him at all.

lol Well, Brock wasnt running his mouth after he fought Carwin. Carwin may have lost, but maybe he beat some respect into Brock.

Big Country isnt really slow, hes got good footwork and just hasnt had to move around much. I think his physique is rather deceptive to many, but people are starting to take him seriously.

Going to be a good fight with him and Dos Santos on Aug 7th. It will be a good measuring stick to see if hes ready to climb that top ten ladder. I think Dos Santos is coming in with more momentum, and I think the hes heavily favored amongst the odd makers. But, Roy seems to have a belly full of surprises ^_^
