So, I have been a Chaos player almost the entire time I have played the game - about 8 years now. I finally decided to start collecting a Tyranid force with the recent release of the codex, but I didn't want to do it alone. So, I got my FLGS to run an escalation league! This gives me the opportunity to get the feel for my nids in progressively larger games, but encourages me to have them built and painted before a deadline, something I am pretty bad at without encouragement. The league so far looks like it will be pretty large, maybe 10 or more people. The majority of the enemy forces are still unknowns, but I will be up against Space Wolves, Chaos, Tau, and IG for sure.

The rules state that I must have the points total required for each match assembled and painted to a three color standard at least. I plan to go a little better than that, but not by too much. I'll be using a color scheme yet to be decided of no more than 3 (major) colors, with detail colors, bases, and highlighting providing more colors above the minimum. This is my first time doing really serious building and painting with a deadline, and I have always been a bit of a lazy hobbyist - I have very little painting experience, and have never done mmuch highlighting or inking before.

Tips, suggestions, ideas, praise, ciriticsm, and priase are all welcome. I hope to be updating at least once or twice a week, as long as it seems like anyone is interested. I am not only going to be building, painting, and battling, but building a lore background for my as-yet-unnamed Hive Fleet. Speaking of which, in addition to the pictures posted below, I made a poll with some of the names I have in mind, some of which are a little ridiculous. Please vote and post any suggestions you have about the name, the lore, or the modelling and painting process!

Of course, I couldn't start the blog without a few pictures to get things rolling. For the first League battle, the 29th of this month, I need to produce 200 points of painted, battle ready models for a Kill Team match. Thanks to the force org for Kill Team, I do not need an HQ, and can take any 1 elite, 2 troops, and/ord 1 fast attack I want. I looked through the USRs in the rulebook - the rules allow you to give three different models one USR each, of your choice, provided there are no doubles - and settled on a starting list after some deliberation. Here is what I am going with:

Hive Guard (FNP) 50
Hive Guard (Stealth) 50
Tyranid Warrior (EW) 40
-Barbed Strangler
2 Tyranid Warriors 60

Sadly, my FLGS is all sold out of Hive Guard, and besides, the models are top heavy metal models (which I hate), and cost 22 bucks a pop. Instead, I decided to convert them up out of some parts I had available - Tyranid Warriors, with Carnifex bits and a few odds and ends. I set to building, and here they are, fully assembled! (They are still WIP - I need to do some GSing and filing still)

They are all large but low-res, so rather than trying to post them all up here, I will share a link to my gallery page. I'll get a better camera and use that for future photos.

Tell me what you think, ask me questions, whatever!

Well seeing as many of the Hive Fleets are based on different types of Mythological creatures My suggestion would be something around Hive Fleet Chimera, If thats already taken I'd go for a Hive Fleet Spectre Definition: Spectre or specter usually refers to a ghost or other apparition.

I have lots of fun making names for tyranid Hive fleet ( As I have my own tyranid army [ 2nd Army ] )

I'd go Mogwai. Mostly because Imperials will be like "What the heck is a Mogwai?", then they'd get eaten.

Most of those names are mythical creatures, or at least fictional ones. Mogwai is a bit of a joke - watch the movie Gremlins and you'll understand. The others are from the writings of HP Lovecraft, Norse mythology, Starcraft, and Greek mythology, respectively. Tartarus is not a creature, but the others are. There is already a guy at the FLGS who runs a Hive Fleet he calls Phantom, so I am trying to avoid anything similar. Chimera is a little too overused for my taste.

I do appreciate the suggestions so far, though.

Voted tartarus as its the only one that really rolls of the toungue and that I can take seriously. That said, it is a good name and as a big nid fan Im looking forward to some more minis and of course some color. The mock you hive guard looks the business, although the single antenna looks a little out of place imo. Lose that and he will be sick

Hive Fleet Spectre is my personal fleet name, but you can use it if you must.

May I reccomend Hive Fleet Charon. Charon was the skeletal ferryman to the underworld in Greek Mythology.

Ah, just thought up a new name. Hive Fleet Carcinos, the crab from Greek mythology. It fits because GW's last two Fleets are named after aquatic mythological creatures.

Umm, Tartarus is the prison of the Titans in Greek mythology. It sure beats most others.

Looks like we have a clear winner in Tartarus. I'll work on writing a bit of fluff and coming up with a good paint job . The kill team match has been pushed back a few weeks thanks to a plethora of late joiners, so I have a little more time, which is fortunate. The FLGS is having shipping woes and have been out of Tyranid Warriors for a few weeks!

Anyways, I'll update again as soon as I have more to share.
