Marines= Simple, effective, fun to model and paint
Daemons= Complicated, mostly metal, fun to paint
They're both pretty simple after your first few games. Both can do well, but neither of them are "the Best ever". Cookie-cutters run wild for CSM, which gets pretty boring after awhile.
I personally would say, go for daemons, since their color schemes are pretty simple and they look good on the table.

I'd say do both along side of each other. You can use your Daemons w/ CSM or just run a pure CSM force. Or, play Daemons only. So really, that's win win win in my book.

I would say go CSM. CSM Really are ALOT of fun to paint and model as Samus_Aran said. And, as Rymafyr said, you can have summoned daemons as well. The only problem with this is if you really like the Chaos Daemons characters, because the current CSM 'dex doesnt have rules for them. Personal opinin only, I don't have the Daemons codex (on the to-get list)

With the upcoming release of the Daemons, I'm sorely tempted to start a Daemon army so I can play both 40k and fantasy with them. Not a bad idea considering my Tau are shelved.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

I came up against this same question a few days ago. I whittled my options down to a Tzeentch/Slaanesh Daemons army or a Thousand Suns CSM army. Both look awesome and look like a lot of fun to paint and convert. I eventually chose Daemons. They seem more customizable and more interesting to field than CSM.

I prefer daemons, but I just refuse to play marines, of any variety. It's a science fantasy game, it seems wrong somehow to play humans. Plus I don't like the marine armor, it just doesn't look appealing to me. As for rules/playability, I find the daemons require a bit more thought, during list creation, and play, which is something I like.
