Say I have a unit of bulls, 3 wide 3 deep with full command, then join a character to them. What happens? Does one of the command slip to the second rank, or does the character, or do I have to make my ranks 4 wide? Or something else entirely?

One of the command moves to the second rank, and you lose the benefit.

I suggest the champion....

I don't think you lose the benefit if you move the banner to the second rank.

Command must be in the front rank, if there is no room for characters in the front rank, they go to the second.

Funnily enough, the BRB says the exact same thing about the command: If there's no room, one or more must be placed in the second rank. Which takes precedence?

Interestingly enough, I believe that the command takes precedence since the BRB mentions on page 97 that the command group can not be moved back to make room for characters.

Damn that seems crazy....another one of those subtle changes that is not at all obvious!

It seems that the command group rules only allow members of the command group to move to the second rank if there are too many command group models in the front rank - as the characters rules state the command models cannot be moved.

So order of prefernce is:
move characters to back ranks; if still no room then
Move command models; no penalty for not being in the front.

Remember though, being monstrous infantry allows the character Ogre to throw 3 attacks forward. Not the full compliment, but better than 1.

A smarter move is go 4 wide.

Also you can throw attacks forward but not be hit back....

Couldnt you just make way for the character during combat? So unengaged, the character has to sit in the second rank, but when the fighting starts, he can use make way to push the musician to the back?

That would still contradict the "where the command group may sit" rules - you COULD go there but it would break a rule, so you cannot.

Fair enough, good to know - musician gets pushed aside...
