I've been using orange for the under coat and after 2-3 coats of yellow it still looks like crap.
What should i be using

Probably white.

Iyanden Darksun works quite well, I find.

Well, when I was Spraying in Daemonic Yellow, I gave them a quick Scoosh of Skull White first. This gave them a more Full-Bodied, Solid Look, and also made the finish quite a bit Brighter, whilst remaining very, very Matte. I'd recommend you do the same, even if you're Hand-Painting the Yellow; you should see the difference. Iyanden Darksun would work great also, and would be a much easier Base Coat to lay down than White. Happy Painting!

Try a basecoat of white with a yellow wash.

darksun for the win, esp if you have a black undercoat.
