I'm going to start a Tau army soon and I've been wondering what type of army to get. I'm a shooty type player, so I think Tau would be perfect. Also, are Kroot worth buying? I'm gonna need SOME type of assault troops.

Also, what would be a good color to paint them? (I'm not going to paint them orange/tan like everyone else. I was thinking white, but I'm no quite sure)

Well I've never painted a white scheme personally but I've heard it's difficult to pull off.

Cheese Elemental-Love does not bloom in 40k. Love burns. It gets turned inside out, set on fire, raped, shot with bolters, and beaten with a crowbar.

People tend to notice Pariahs. If you're in a crowded room with one, everyone's killing themselves.

Armies:
40K: 500+ pts,
1000+pts, 1000+ pts
Fantasy: Lizardmen (Wip)
Planned: Deamons, Easterlings

Yes kroot are good. They are better shooty units than firewarriors if you can stick them in cover. If you need some type of assault units they you should play another army because tau have no assault troops. the best kroot do in assaults is they can slow down assaults so you get another round of shooty.

Tau don't have any assault units.

Kroot, supported by Kroot hounds are the best, by which I mean they are the least bad.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Get a lot of Hammerheads and Broadsides, hunker down in your deployment zone, and pray that the game ends before your opponents reach your line.

I think a white color scheme with Tau will be Awesome.

Pick a different color for the commanders, though. White is for commanders in the standard orange color scheme.

This guy needs help, serious 40k help.

I run a snow theme, so I use white and terracotta as my two main colors.

Runnin up on ya.

My advice...

Start out with a battle force which will get you:
12 Firewarrios
12 Kroot
1 Crisis Suit
3 Stealth Suits
1 Devilfish
A few drones

You'll want to expand that further to include:
8-11 more crisis suits including 1-2 commander sets
12-24 more firewarriors
2 Devilfish
2 Hammerheads (buy the skyray box since it has the hammerhead parts as well)
3-6 Broadside Battlesuits
8 Pathfinders
Optional:
8-12 Pathfinders (1/2 with railrifles)- this if you like the unit and the synergy with the markerlights.
12-36 more Kroot (if you like them)
-8-16 Kroot Hounds
- 2 Kroot Shapers
*Don't buy any krootox because they suck and actually make your kroot units less effective.
4-8 Piranha skimmers (they're as fragile as SM landspeeders but can kill some tanks) personally, I think they're too expensive for what they do (screen) and with hammerheads and broadsides you have all the anti-tank any army could wish for.

Everyone has their own opinion and play style so I highly recommend starting out with the battle force, play a couple of low point games, and then go from there.

Welcome to the greater good and best of luck.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

White is fine. On Games Workshop pages there is actually quite good looking example of white painted Tau Feature Army.

When starting Tau, thing which one must learn and accept is that Tau troops are fragile and cannot look after themselves (not even the Kroot). They need support and one needs to be constantly mindful of their positioning, otherwise they will get either assaulted or flamered to death. Crisis suits, Hammerheads and Broadsides are bread & butter of any Tau army.

And as my friend learned the hard way, make sure your broadsice units have a model count of five so when you lose a drone they don't take a leadership check and run off the board like cowards

Wow. I meant pretty much a five hundred point army and then going from there. (Yes I know it wasn't specified). ANyway, what are some suggestions for A roughly 500 pt. tau army?
